"Because," Andrea's voice is low, "you're 16 in that picture, Cassie. The same age you are now." Cassie collapses into a chair, putting her head in her hands.
"Oh no, oh god no. Everything's screwed up now! Crap!" Tess places her hand on Cassie's shoulder.
"What's screwed up?" she wonders.
"Everything. Literally everything. There are two of me now! I can't come back, everyone thinks I'm dead!" Cassie's voice breaks, and now she's the one crying.
"I should just go back to 1983 and let everyone think I'm still dead."
"Don't leave again!" Tess cries quickly, grasping onto Cassie's arm as if the she thought Cassie would disappear."
"I'm such an idiot!" Cassie yells suddenly, face palming. "I'm such a freaking idiot! I knew I should have just stuck with time travel! I knew it!"
"Cassie," Jessie says cautiously, "do you know why there are two of you?" Cassie's raises her head, and nods silently.
"Where's-where's the machine?" she asks.
"Up in my room," I say, "come on." I stand and lead the way to my bedroom.
"Wow, Kat, your room has changed so much!" Cassie remarks, crossing the threshold.
"Yeah, I know," I say, opening my closet and reaching far into the back. My closet I'd as messy as, if more messy than, my room. I've buried the time machine under a pile of shirts at the back kf my closet. The shirts were hanging up once, now they just kinda... aren't.
"Here," I pass the machine to Cassie, who takes it and goes to sit on my bed.
"Machine on," she says. The blue scanner turns on, and the grid crosses her face.
"Cassandra Low, access denied. Storage unavailable." The cool female voice says. Cassie groans.
"It still hasn't fully reset yet," she says, "someone else open it." Tess joins Cassie on the bed, and takes the machine from her. Being the only other person who's used it, it makes sense for her to take over.
"Machine on," Tess mimics Cassie. The scanner passes across her face.
"Tess Rachel Livingston, access granted," it says. The holographic image with years, a calendar, and a picture pop up.
"Now what?" Tess asks. Cassie reaches forward, and places her hand over the top of the image, almost as if she was trying to grab it. She jerks her wrist counterclockwise quickly, and hologram spins.
For some reason, it looks different on this side. Instead of the dates and times, there's just a bunch of horizontal, parallel lines. The one in the very center of the image glows softly.
"We're here." Cassie points to the glowing line.
"What are these?" Andrea asks, gesturing to the rest of the lines.
"These, are parallel dimensions," Cassie says, nonchalantly.
"I'm sorry what?" Andrea asks. I'm just as confused as she is.
"Parallel dimensions," Cassie says again. "Every single one of them is the same, with one thing different. With each choice you make, a new dimension is formed. A dimension where you made the opposite choice." She starts to scroll through the lines, they don't seem to be ending.
"These are all of Tess's dimensions, from a the choices SHE'S made. It's different for each of us."
"This is insane. And how does it explain your doppelganger?" Andrea presses. We're all hungry for answers.
"In each dimension, there's a copy of you, since it's the same beside that one choice. So while I was traveling between dimensions, I guess a copy of me accidentally came back with me." Cassie shrugs, again acting like it's no big deal.
"But your copy was dead!" Jessie suddenly yells, "that person probably thought it was actually you!"
"But it wasn't."
"But they didn't know that! They probably thought they were shooting you! Someone out there wants you dead!" Cassie pales as she realizes something.
"What is it?" Tess asks, concerned.
"I-I think I know who it was," she says.
"Well who was it?" Jessie demands.
"I-I think-I think, Tess, it was your dad."
A/N Omg so many updates all of a sudden! I'm so proud of myself! I'm sorta remembering where I planned to have this go now, which is good. Also, I hope you liked my chapter of answers. Comment if you thought it was helpful!
Thanks a ton,
