The camera sits on the kitchen table. All four of us are gathered around it.
"Wait, what do you mean Cassie isn't dead?" Jessie demands.
"I mean someone was in her room, and when we went in there the line Cassie wrote everywhere was written in the dust." I explain for the fifth time.
"Kat," Andrea gently places her hand on my arm, "I know you want to believe Cassie is alive, but we saw the video. We heard her scream. Cassie is dead. There really is no denying it now." I shrug her off.
"Well then who do you think wrote it?" I demand. Andrea shrugs,
"I don't know" she sighs.
"You know I think we should do?" Tess starts. everyone else-including me- groans, "well that's not very nice," Tess says before continuing, "I think we should go back to the lake house and look for the time machine." Andrea put's her face in her hands,
"There's no time machine Tess." she mumbles, "and it's 3:00 in the morning. I'm not going anywhere until I have coffee, I need caffeine!"
"Where do you girls think you're going?" my mom's stern voice sounds from the corner of the kitchen.
"Oh, crap." I say, turning around slowly. My mom is leaning against the counter, her arms crossed over her chest and her blue eyes flashing.
"You four aren't going anywhere at such an ungodly hour." she says.
"Mom we have to, we're looking for something important." I whine.
"What is it you are looking for exactly?" my mom demands.
"We can't tell you." I mutter, looking at the floor. My mom sighs and runs a hand over her face,
"Kat, how many times do I have to tell you? We do not keep secrets in this house. Ever since your father left you've been hiding things from me." somehow, my mom can look menacing in a pink bathrobe and fuzzy slippers with extreme bedhead.
"Well maybe I kept things from you before. While dad was here, and you just never noticed." I say, flicking a stray lock of hair off my shoulder.
"Don't take that tone with me missy!" my mom snaps. I can barely suppress a giggle, since that is basically what every mom says at some point in books and movies. She points to the stairs that lead up to the second floor.
"Upstairs, now." she says, "the rest of you," she points at Andrea, Tess, and Jessie in turn, "you girls can go home." the three of them all nod mutely, and trudge to the door.
"But mom, I can prove Cassie is alive!" I protest. Jessie, Andrea, and Tess turn around to stare at me.
"Kat, when will you get this into your head? Cassie is dead. You saw her body." my mom sighs.
As soon as the front door closes, my mom turns to me.
"Upstairs, now." she says. I turn my gaze to the ground again and slowly make my way up to my room. My bed sits in the far corner, I flop onto it and stare at the ceiling. I need to find a way out, I need to check the lake house. I think. But I'm probably grounded for a month, there's no way I'm getting out anytime soon.
As the sun slowly rises, I slowly drift to sleep.
