The bushes planted in front if Cassie's house make it hard to climb up to the second floor. And still Tess finds a way. Unfortunately this way involves climbing a tree and attempting to reach the windowsill. Tess takes gymnastics, so she's good at this type of thing. I, on the other hand, take soccer and have horrible flexibility.
"Oh come on Kat. It's not that hard." Tess whines.
"Yes, it is." I say, missing the windowsill for the fifth time.
"Honestly, how are you so bad this?" Tess asks.
I finally grab hold of the windowsill, now comes the part of actually getting into the house.
"Okay, on three swing your leg off the branch and through the windowsill."
"Why did I agree to this?" I ask.
"One..." Tess starts counting.
"This is a bad idea."
"Two..."
"I'm officially scared."
"Three!" Tess yells. I take a quick breath and swing my leg off the branch. My left leg hooks onto the windowsill, but my bright foot slips. I let out a small scream as I fall.
My right hand flies up and grasps onto the windowsill. I'm hanging from the window, too many feet above the ground for my liking. Tess reaches down and grabs my other hand, pulling into Cassie's room.
It's dark in Cassie's room, whoever was in here turned off the light when we started crossing the street. Tess pulls out a flashlight and shines it around the room. It still looks exactly the way it did the day Cassie disappeared. Except for one thing, the dust on the desk has been disturbed. I creep across the room and shine my flashlight on it. The words Unable are the loved to die for love is immortality are scrawled quickly in the dust.
Those words are from the poem Unable are the Loved to Die by Emily Dickinson. But they are also the words written on Ali's grave stone in Pretty Little Liars. Cassie and I loved that show, and when we saw the episode with those words in it, Cassie thought it was the coolest line ever. She wrote it everywhere. On the bathroom stalls, on the inside of her locker, on the sidewalk, on almost all of her classwork... Anywhere she could reach.
"What does that mean?" Tess asks.
"It's a line from the poem Unable are the Loved to Die by Emily Dickinson. It's also what is written on Ali's grave in Pretty Little Liars, Cassie loved it. If you found it written anywhere besides in an actual book, you would know Cassie had been there. It was kinda like her way of saying, 'yes, I was here'" I explain, "So the only reason for it to be written here, would be..."
"Yes?" Tess sounds impatient.
"Would be if Cassie was here."
