Tess sticks her head out the door, panting. Her hair is messy, and sticking up everywhere. There are dirt smudges on her face and shirt.
"What?" Jessie say, blinking.
"The time machine, I found it!" Tess says excitedly, "come see! come see!" she says, pointing back through the door. We all follow her into the house. Andrea complaining the whole time that is no time machine. Tess leads us to the basement stairs, and yanks the door open. She sprints down the stairs so fast I'm afraid she'll fall and break her neck. It's very dirty in the basement. In fact, the floor is actually dirt. The only light comes from a small, dirty window near the ceiling. Tess pulls open a rough, wooden door underneath the stairs. Inside, there are boxes and bins and bags. So much unused stuff.
"Hey, look at this." I say. I'm still holding Tess's camera, and I zoom in on a dusty, plastic Target bag. A colorful bathing suit is sticking out slightly. I pull it out and hold it up, it's covered in floral print. The flowers are in yellow, pink, and orange.
"I remember Cassie wearing this when we were seven, We were diving off the dock, and you thought you saw a shark." I say, turning around and pointing at Jessie, "there was no shark."
"Shut up," Jessie says, pushing me playfully. Tess clears her throat,
"Guys, time machine." she says, pointing to something in the far back. I put down the bathing suit and clamber over several boxes to get top what Tess is pointing at. It's a big box that's been opened recently, probably by Tess. Knowing Tess, she probably opened the biggest box she could find when she got down here. Inside is an opaque, thick, plastic bag. It's about a foot and a half tall, and roughly 8 inches wide. I grab it and pull it out.
"How do you know this is the time machine?" I ask Tess. She holds out a piece of folded paper.
"This was in there too." she says. I take the paper and read it out loud.
Please tell me you get this. Please tell me you opened the box. The instructions are in the bag, I think. Along with something more. I hope you can help me.
