I just nodded.
"Now we noticed she doesn't have any close family so..."
What's she getting at?
"So we were wondering if you would keep an eye on her? We can't tell you the full extent of what happened because you aren't related..."
I smile kindly at her. "Sure. That shouldn't be a problem."
She turns around slowly and gracefully.
"She's awake now if you wanna see her."
I got up and followed her back a few long, dreary, bland, and depressing hallways filled with groaning, screaming, and sobbing. The smell of sanitary equipment and medicine everywhere. Finally she turns into room 208.
She looked like shit. She had an IV needle in her forearm. Her hair was a knotty mess. Her face was pale with dark bags under her eyes. She had a red nose and her cuts were deep and looked painful. The room was damp and lightly lit and the sound of the tv faintly playing in the background. Her shallow heartbeat creating a rhythm on the heart monitor. The steady rise and fall of her chest and though all she's been through she's still alive. Her heart beats on like a drum...
