I trudged behind my parents, falling farther behind with each step despite my carrying of only a single suitcase of belongings. Thank the Queen for Faerie Dust, eh? If I did not have any, to fit all my things into one measly bag would have only been but a dream. I may be a magical Fae, but I am also a girl with whom comes quite a few clothes…

If I so desired, I could probably reach the portal before my parents, but the weight of memories dragged me down harder than any tangible weights. I felt like I had a manacles shackled to each ankle, forcing me to drag the weight of the world along with me as I dragged my legs.

It was not the scenery. The portal is a majestic little waterfall that empties into a sparkling blue pool of water so clean you can see your reflection even in the moonlight. The surrounding trees are proud and mighty robur [oaks] and enchanting vinea [vine trees] that mortals so often associate with us. I cannot complain about the undergrowth either – lush, green, and healthy – perfect for a Forest Sprite to lose herself in.

I abandoned my observations as my mother and my father reached the edges of the pool. I hurried to reach them, dragging those imaginary manacles, but no matter how fast I moved my weary body, I could not escape the memories of the last time I visited this pond…

“Come on, Bru! It will be fine,” giggled Jessamine as she danced around the pond, looking every bit the perfect image of a joyful faerie. We had just left an old Water Nymphite telling stories of the human realm and Jessa wanted to go and see the human realm. Badly.

I frowned. “But Jessa, what if –”

“Nothing bad happens and we miss the opportunity of a lifetime?” asked Jessa, quite rudely interrupting. With her personality though, all bubbly and innocent, you could never become irate with such a sweet little faerie. “Yeah, what if…”

“You heard Avia Suzette. You could die! We could both die!” I was so terrified of the unknown dangers lurking, so frustrated that I did not know the right words to convince her of the insanity she was about to commit. I am her twin for the Queen’s sake! If anyone understands her, it should be me.

But sometimes I do not, and it kills me. What if I somehow caused her death or something? I am older, if only by a few seconds, and I should be the one to protect her.

“But Bru,” she whined with her signature pout, “I want to go. I swear we will only be a few seconds,” she said. As I contemplated she jumped in the pond, dress and all, and began to frolic in the clear blue waters. Water Nymphites... You could never convince me to do such things.

“How will we get there and back? I am a Forest Sprite and for all we know you could be an Air Pixie,” I reasoned trying to delay this.

Jessamine just gave a hearty laugh and continued swimming laps effortlessly. “I believe I am going to be a Water Nymphite, dear, sweet Brucie. Of course, I will not know for certain until next month.”

“Are you sure everything will be alright?” I double-checked. This did not feel right to me.

“1,000 percent, Bru! If all else fails - which will not happen, sweet sister - we will mske use og those pretty little wings of yours.”

I sighed, praying that my secret training in the middle of the night with Jessamine to control my nature as a Forest Sprite would come in handy. My wings, though majestic with luminescent swirls of greens of all shades and even some browns and blue, would not last long when flying with such a heavy burden.
