Pre and post-full moon Remus seemed almost unable to string a sentence together as all his words would just slur into one sound, so he would communicate in simple words and sound unless he was making the effort to speak to a teacher. James was the only one who could decode these messages.
For example, Sirius could be hugging Remus in attempt to make him feel better and the response he would get may be something along the lines of "Sirius...mmmmnnnhh..." and James would just suddenly sit up and be like "Padfoot, mate, ease up, you're hurting him."
Sirius would then go into a mood not unlike Remus', Sirius, however, would be refusing to talk out of spite because he couldn't understand how James managed to be the one to speak fluent Moony.
