Peter was constantly chewing gum, this drove Remus insane because he was extremely misophonic due to heightened senses and what not, he could deal with lots of people eating in the Great Hall because there were plenty of other sounds to distract him, but when they were in the Common Room or dorms, all he could here was Peter chewing. It took every ounce of his inner strength not to go completely manic.
*Misophonia is literally "hatred of sound", the most common form is, just like this, getting physically angry being able to hear someone chewing food.*
