They left the building behind, not turning back to watch it disappear from a distance. They were too focused on the town ahead. Actual people were only about a mile away; it was over. They were free. This was their next step in life.

Chloe's first breath wasn't even close to what she had expected. The air wasn't any fresher than it had been; the sunlight wasn't as warm as she thought it would feel. Things weren't as different now as what she thought they would be when they left. She couldn't help but glance over at Jacob as they made their way towards the town, towards freedom. For the first time, she actually saw hope in his eyes, dancing its way around his irises,a strike of lightning, only visible for an instant. Collin had stopped crying halfway to the town; the sound of birds chirping made him giggle out of joy.

Margaret grabbed ahold of Melanie's legs and helped carry her the rest of the way to the civilization. They shared a look with each other. David would've given her a peck on the cheek if it weren't for the fact that they were running away from men with guns; he decided he'd do it later, once they were far away and safe, once they were alone.

Jacob held his hand over his bullet wound on his arm, luckily he was hit on the same limb that was injured by the fall, so he was still capable of running on his own. He looked over to Chloe and then she averted her eyes. A smile crept onto his face involuntarily; he couldn't help but smile whenever he caught her looking at him.

Melanie's eyes rolled around in the back of her head, and David caught the movement from the corner of his vision. "We're almost safe," He said/shouted to her, hoping she could hear his words. And they were, the town was close, almost close enough to touch.

Chloe looked up to the sky and watched a flock of birds fly overhead in a V formation Once they reached the city limits, Chloe looked back and saw nothing. No building in the distance, no men chasing after them, nothing that resembled the hell that once was. Then she felt her ear, the device still attached to her. She pressed it to her lips, not sure if it worked both ways with sending and receiving sound, and said, "I guess we're not so perfect after all."
