[ the crooked saint ]

she bathes in religion as second skin
the words of the apostles like
a daily mantra on her cloak
the good book in her hands
a testimony to her faith

(the pious says she is meant for greater things)

the nuns prepare her for the day
rubbing essential oils on her body
exotic fragrances from the West
and the wisdom of the ancients
written at the back of her hand
a lady in waiting leads her to
the cross at the center of the square
a pious rod of conviction, sturdy
like a penitentiary for grace
hesitation falters her step

(can she die for the sins of many?)

she makes the sign of the cross
steps into the platform, the crowd
gathers around her sacrifice, eyes
hoping for a miracle of ages in
the form of a young girl's prophecy
as the next French martyr
