(the idea of falling in love sounds too good to be true)

the girl notices the fresh flowers on her desk
a little note from the man in accounting
telling her to have a good day, to stay
hydrated for human resources puts
out all the fires in the department
her lips quirk at the corners, but she
won't let herself absorb the feeling
good things don't last anyway

by 6 pm, he comes knocking
on her cubicle in the tenth floor
asking her to dinner by the sushi place
and as usual she turns him down
with a polite, practiced smile and as usual
he never takes no for an answer

the sky has sunk in the afterglow
of the twilight lingering in the horizon
he keeps pace with her footsteps
always the gentleman, the man from
the thirteenth floor crunching numbers
he opens the door for her and the tiny
fissure of the gesture seeps into her heart

(but maybe falling in love with you might not just be a bad idea)
