Side Chapter (Canon): A Truth Unbearable.

Start from the beginning

Goodwitch and his wife told him off, but he looked like he couldn't care less as he clicked his tongue and turned away. when he did that he made eye contact with Ruby, as he had looked upwards and into the stands. she could have sworn she saw him scowl at her, but she might be wrong as Cardin sat behind her.

anyway anyway, that was in the past, now is what really mattered. they were able to ask questions.

and questions were asked. what missions did they do? what was their longest mission? did they work with anyone else? you know, the kinda basic ones. Ruby refrained from asking about how the weapons worked. she had a different question on her mind but she didn't know how to word it.

"what's the worst thing that's happened to you on a mission?" somebody asked.

everyone, and i mean everyone, watched as Goodwitch of all people flinched. flinched then looked away to stare at the floor in sorrow, or was it grief? Ruby made notice of how the tails curled downward of the two faunus.

the woman began speaking.

"we....were out a mission one day. it was week long." she started, taking a shaky brief. her husband placed a hand on her back. "nothing happened to us during the mission but...it's what happened to someone else that made it the worst mission we ever did."

silence. nobody knew what to say. the husband took a deep breathe and looked up.

"we had a son. emphasis on the word 'had.'"

'...oh....please oum don't tell me that...'

"his name was (Y/n)."

Ruby felt something inside her break. she looked down at the desk, balled her fist and grit her teeth. why did she feel so sad? why were tears building up in her eyes?

"whilst we were out on a mission, our son was involved in a grimm attack. he was only 2. we weren't there to save him..because we were on a mission."

"we wish we never took that mission. because if we didn't...our son would still be alive. it's the one thing we regret the most in our lives."

"i'm so so sorry i asked!" the previous student shouted, clearly not wanting to bring up such a heavy topic.

but there was on question hanging in the air, why did Goodwitch look like she herself was grieving? because the answer was actually incredibly simple. during that week, the week the two (L/n)'s were out on a mission...she was entrusted to look after (Y/n) for the week. and under her watch, he died.  she carries that around in her heart every day of the week, she feels as if she should not be forgiven. if only she didn't fall asleep so early on she she could keep an eye on the curious toddler. but she didn't. and that led to his death.

god, she still remembers how she found the body of the boy. it made her sick. the missing eye, the half eaten leg, the torn off arm, the deathly pale skin, even how one of the white fox ears was half ripped off.

"serves the little fucker right." Cardin whispered....just loud enough for Ruby to hear.

but it seems he also forget the two parents had enhanced hearing. the two stared at Cardin with empty gazes, and slowly, Ruby turned to look over her shoulder. god she was furious at what he just said.

before Ruby could even do anything, because she was straight up about to attack the boy behind her, an arrow shot past her head  and landed right next to Cardin's head.

Ruby looked down at the faunus' for a moment before back at Cardin.

"what did you just say?" the attacker in question asked. "go on. say it louder."
