The Metkayina tribe had many customs.
Neteyam was not used to a lot of them. While his brother flirted with and caught feelings for the site of the chief, he found himself falling for Ao'nung and Tsireya's older sister, Y/N.
She was perfect—kind, smart, quick-witted, and even-tempered. She seemed never to break a sweat wrangling her two younger siblings. She had this poise that made her seem so elegant and... to put it simply, you were beautiful, and he could not stop thinking about you.
Even now as you sat across from him in the circle as you all were talking, he could not help but stare.
"Have you ever been in love?"
The question slipped from Tuk's mouth before he even noticed what she said.
You turned wistfully to the ocean.
" 'awlie... once. Long ago." You said softly, a smile gracing your lips. "But that is in the past."
"But... who was it?" the young girl asked, tugging at the string of pearls on your arm.
Neteyam watched curiously, ears perking up. Yes, who? Who did he have to compete with for your affections?
"Well, it does not matter now. All I know is that... it was my first love, and I can not love anything like I love.... Oh, I'm sorry, I must be off, I have some duties to take care of before the celebration tonight," you got up, excusing yourself, dusting the sand off of your skin.
Neteyam got up, extending a hand.
"May I be of any assistance?" he asked, his eyes looking into your own.
Your face felt hot.
"Ah... while I'd love help... these are duties I must not let you see... ayoe have to put together some things," you respond bashfully before bowing your head, retreating.
Neteyam watched as you walked away, a dumb-struck look on his face.
"Aye, much more of that staring, and your eyes will fall out and follow her bro," Lo'ak teased, nudging his older brother.
Neteyam turned to glare at his younger brother before Tsireya chimed in, "Lo'ak is right." She giggled before continuing, "You like my sister?"
Neteyam only turned away, trying to hide his embarrassment as Lo'ak teased him, and then Tuk had to innocently jump in.
"If you and Y/N do tsaheylu she'll be like my big sister and we can stay here forever and ever and you'll have babies-"
"Tuktirey!" Neteyam interrupted, scolding his little sister.
The others in the circle laughed at his embarrassment, teasing him until Ao'nung spoke up.
"Good luck with that. She is... ahhh txa' re'o. Hard headed. Stubborn. I'm her little brother, I should know."
You were always making sure things got done a certain way, but that did not mean you were stubborn. And what did being stubborn have to do with love?
"Well... I am patient. I am... someone who takes charge," he said softly.
He knew that was what you needed above all else. Someone who would do things without you asking, who took care of you. You were always so busy taking care of everyone else, rarely did he ever see anyone do anything for you. When little kids wanted to help you with your weaving, you appreciated the sentiment, but would later fix the poorly made baskets. You were always running around for something. As the oldest, you were most likely going to be the future chieftess, if Ao'nung was not of age yet.
