There was definitely an adjustment period. You were still sort of grieving the loss of your previous job, and nobody from I.M.P. had bothered to contact you over the next few days. In that time, you were going through your pre-prepared meals, and taking a well-needed mental break from everything. You had Stolas to rely on now, but that feeling was very strange. This entity, this demon prince, your friend, that you had only recently connected with after months of radio silence, had given you a job in place of I.M.P. Everything about your situation you needed to process; you were now beholden to Stolas.
You had told Stolas about worries of commuting, but he just told you to use the portal spell that you had learned from the grimoire. You had been shocked that the spell could be used without the grimoire, and didn't exclusively have to be used to go to Earth. Stolas just laughed, amused, and said it would be fine. He would teach you more if you really needed it. Thankfully, you were able to cast the spell from memory, and since you had already been to Stolas's mansion and knew where it was, it went from a concern to a convenience.
After you had talked to him, you had gone on your well-deserved, impromptu, stay-at-home vacation. You were still processing the loss of your old job, but you were running out of food, and reserve funds. You needed to start working for Stolas soon. One phone call later, and you would start working tomorrow, with a small sign-on bonus to take care of your dwindling funds for food and rent. You had asked Stolas to just be paid early, but he had insisted on the bonus. You were extremely grateful, and to be honest, there was a little bit of crying. You were still in an emotionally vulnerable state, as you now felt completely disconnected from your old job. Even Loona, your best friend, hadn't called or texted, which was unlike her.
When you arrived to Stolas's mansion on the first day, all you had was a nice jacket and casual clothes. It was the best you had on hand, and you wanted to look the best you could for working at a mansion. You had freaked out some imp servants, as Hellhounds (even though you weren't one) were an extremely rare sight here, and you had also just come from a portal that appeared out of nowhere. You asked for Stolas, and one went for him while another demanded you stayed right where you were. It was obvious they didn't trust you.
Stolas arrived soon after the imp had gone for him. When he explained the situation, the imp servants left you alone, but were still hesitant. Great; you felt alienated on your first day by your...new coworkers? You weren't sure if that term felt right or not. Stolas looked at you, and immediately called to have your measurements taken for a suit. This surprised you; you hadn't even said anything about your clothes, but Stolas was already on top of it. At this, you felt even more out of place at Stolas's mansion.
Once you were dressed for the job, Stolas gave you a tour. He explained that despite the fact that you would be at his side at all times, you should still know the layout of the building. As he guided you through large rooms, extravagant hallways, and past gigantic paintings of himself and his daughter Octavia, you felt more and more like a stranger. Stolas then boasted of his daughter to you.
"You really should meet her, she's a prodigy in her studies!"
"I, uh...already met her when I was at I.M.P.," you reminded him. "When she went to L.A."
Stolas's face went red at the memory. He had failed his daughter that day, despite earning her trust back.
"Right. Yes. Well, it couldn't hurt to get to know her better. I might need you to protect her sometimes..."
"I thought this job was mostly for show. I told you, I'm not good at—"
"Nonsense! I'm sure you'll do great. You worked at an assassination business after all! And besides, I doubt I'll actually need you to guard her. She rarely leaves the house."
