Overlord Intro Part 5: The World XXI

Start from the beginning

Your ears perked up at her words. Checked every sinner who's made a carrier deal? How? You were also painfully reminded of their threat, and why you were here in the first place. You fought back a growl as you tried not to think about what it could mean if you failed here. You glanced at Loona. She was maintaining her composure, but you could see her nose twitch for the briefest of moments.

"Fine, so they really are his lackeys, and that means Kerberos is out hiding somewhere" Velvette spoke up. "That means they're scared, and they're someone we can kill. We should torture these servants until they tell us where they're hiding. Then we gut Kerberos like a fish."

You had been fearful before, but now you were terrified. You had been trained to defend yourself against Loona, before you had possessed souls. You were not trained at fighting people this powerful. Were you going to have to fight an Overlord? Maybe even multiple? These were people who when seen in the street, people set themselves on fire as a means of harming themselves before an Overlord could. You tried to keep your own composure, realizing a fight could be futile, would give away who you really were, and would put Loona in great danger, even more than she already was. Loona looked at you for reassurance, but the most you could do was give her a hopeful expression. You were panicking inside, heart pounding.

"Surely we can demand compensation for the stolen souls," Vox said as he joined the conversation. He pounded a fist to his palm, resulting in small sparks being released from his hands. "Then we kill this new Overlord. We have to show that we still hold power over the city."

"ENOUGH!" Carmilla shouted, silencing the V's once again. "Let the servants speak. They've come here to make amends on behalf of Kerberos. As much as I'd like to directly address this new Overlord myself, we cannot deny the influence over the masses they've garnered. Disturbing the Hellhound population, which we have no control over, would pose too much of a risk to act rashly."

A sense of pride filled you at her words. It was certain that you were powerful, earning countless demons' trust, by doing some great good. Even the Overlords themselves had to recognize it.

Carmilla turned to you. "Speak, servant."

You looked to Loona, and she nodded. You had practiced this argument with her. This was all on you, but she was your backup if you needed it.

"Kerberos has heard your complaints. However, they have developed a counterargument: If you're in charge of the systems and territories that provide goods and services to the Pride Ring's population, doesn't that mean you have power enough? Kerberos only controls souls to keep peace. They've put an end to turf wars in districts that are controlled by Hellhounds. The only competition you have between each other now, with a lack of souls, is your industries. You're threatening Lord Kerberos's people, and they will not stand for this. Since they have control over a great portion of the Pride Ring's denizen's hearts and souls, how bad would it be for the Overlords if the ones not under their direct control started an uprising?"

Your words were met with silence. Slowly, the Overlords started questioning each other. It became grumbling, then direct complaints. This was a clear upheaval to the way power was currently controlled. This was a direct attack on the authority of the Overlords, even if it was changing the ways they fought, and a transformation of power.

You once again exchanged glances with Loona. You didn't know how this would conclude, but it sure seemed like what you were doing was working so far. You even went so far as to give her a wry smile.

Then the discussions being held were cut short by one angry TV.

"Fuuuuuck that!" Vox shouted over everyone. He pointed two fingers at you and Loona, startling the both of you. "We've already made our demands clear, and what we're willing to do if they aren't met!" The response from the other Overlords was that of agreement. Nods and murmurs came.
