Overlord Intro Part 5: The World XXI

Start from the beginning

Carmilla stopped pacing when she was near the eel tank. She turned back to face the two beings that she perceived to be Hellhounds, before continuing.

"One. They had all personally met Kerberos. Normally that would mean nothing, as any sinner could claim to have met an Overlord, and meeting sinners to personally make deals has always been necessary, but these were the earliest known records of Kerberos even being mentioned before their rise to power. Two. Nearly all of them claimed that I.M.P. was a company that Kerberos personally recommended before never seeing them again. The combination of these facts coming from the same people is damning, but the final piece of evidence makes the connection between Kerberos and I.M.P. crystal clear. The purchasing of an angelic firearm by the owner of this establishment. I made note of the purchase, and it looks like I had good reason to look into it. It's not often an imp needs this particular type of firepower. It was clearly intended for the killing of a sinner; in case they ended up representing a problem for his business."

Carmilla had you dead to rights. The slip-up that you had feared would happen since the beginning of all of this had come to pass. You remembered that, from the very beginning, in your deal with Blitzø, you had been threatened with an angelic bullet to the skull. Clearly, Blitzø had gone ahead and purchased a full-on angelic weapon in case you did ever become a problem. Obviously you hadn't, but you didn't blame him for buying the gun in the first place.

Loona snorted in disbelief, though her eyes darted towards you for a moment. It was clear that she knew who Carmilla was, but also that her stance on the Overlord was a lack of respect. At least, when it came to defending you.

"So what? That doesn't prove anything. I.M.P.'s a good business. Of course it would get recommended. Blitzø probably needed the weapon because of already-dead targets. Other sinners exist."

You hadn't thought of that, and thanked Loona silently. You had been fully committed to giving up the fact that Kerberos was connected to I.M.P., but it looked like Loona wasn't budging on her feigned ignorance.

Carmilla's reaction to Loona's brattiness was practically non-existent.

"I've silenced, or bought the silence, of those sinners, for what it's worth. Kerberos can thank me for addressing that oversight of theirs."

Wait, what? Why had Carmilla bought the silence of those sinners? Couldn't she have just let them be, or killed them—it would be a waste of resources, you realized. Angelic steel was rare, and she didn't want to risk any for the case of a few sinners. Though she had silenced them, so...the effort was meant as an appeal to Kerberos. What did she want from Ker—you. You were Kerberos, and you had almost forgotten in your state of fear, and the guise of being I.M.P.'s receptionist. She wanted an audience with you. But for what? That you didn't know yet.

Carmilla continued.

"It was trivial to conclude that Kerberos takes advantage of I.M.P.'s business as a way to make deals with brand new souls. However, its highest rate of business and soul-delivering was still below the threshold of what most Overlords might consider a threat."

So that was good. You weren't a threat.

"However..."

Fuck.

"This 'carrier deal' that was developed is of great threat to the established order, or at least what you could call order with the rest of these Overlords," Carmilla said, waving her hand dismissively. Why was she bad-mouthing her peers of similar station? That, in addition to her appeal to Kerberos, had you wondering whether or not she supported the faceless Overlord, rather than despise them for posing a threat. "We don't know the exact nature of the deal, and we've barely managed to gather any intel on it. Hellhounds have proven to be very loyal to Kerberos. I suppose that was to be expected, given their current status as the lowest form of Hellborn in every ring except Pride."
