no response again. she sighed, shrugging at Onyx who also sighed. although luckily for them, your meditation would soon end when a new voice carried it's way into the training room.

"(Y/n)? you in here?"

your eyes shot open and you turned to look over your shoulder. it was Ruby who had entered, looking around for you. once she saw you, she happily smiled and moved over to your sitting form, practically bouncing on her feet when she stood behind you.

"what are you doing?"

'training.'

"by sitting on the floor?"

'mental training. like meditation.'

"oh that...thingy magigy! i remember you doing that before."

'what do you want Ruby?' you silently asked,  knowing that her reason for being here wasn't fully just to see you.

Ruby nodded her head, placing a lone hand to her chin and giving you an uncharacteristic smirk. she sat down on the floor besides you, staring straight into your eyes.

"you're in the doubles round, aren't you?" she spoke, almost as if stating it rather than asking it as a question. "as your wife, i'm confident in my abilities to assess you."

you stared at her in silence for a moment before slowly nodding your head, and she giddily pumped her fist. she was happy. happy over the fact that not only was she right, btu also the fact that she's gonna be able to see you participate in another round.

"i'm going to cheer you on the entire time! you'll win every fight!"

you smiled softly, standing p and offering a hand to her. Ruby gladly accepted and stood up besides you, her hand firmly clasped in your own. she moved in, hugging you tightly and planting a soft kiss onto your cheek.

you did the same, your tail now wrapping around her for a few moments before the both of you pulled away. Onyx and Alice, feeling as if they were now completely irrelevant to the current situation, stepped back and decided to leave, meaning only you and Ruby remained in the training room.

whilst normally, you and Ruby would sit down and talk or leave the training area and scavenge the grounds for either something to eat, drink, or just to find a good place to walk around, you did none of that. you both just remained in a standing position in the middle of the room, staring at each other with love and a playful challenge.

anyne witnessing this would assume the both of you were in a staring contest, or that the both of you were drifting off into space. although it couldn't be any further from the truth. this was no staring contest and you for sure as hell were not lost within your thoughts.

your hand twitched, and your tail flicked to the side. your eyes prickled up for a moment and the hair on your skin stood on edge. your right leg shifted and your foot slid back.

Ruby was the same, her fingers twitched, and she took a slight step backwards, her foot shifted slightly to the side and her cape dramatically swayed to her right.

'what's the score?'

"we're drawing. 36-36. you won last time"

you sent your fist into your open palm, grinning at her before stancing up and readying for combat. the unspoken proposition rung in the both of your minds, it was a proposition long awaited for both parties, a way to test their metal against their partner, to show off abilities and gain recognition behind flaws that only the other would be brutally honest to highlight and abuse.

Ruby's hand glided to her scythe which rested on her hip, the small contraption quickly gaining life and regaining it's full form as Cresent Rose. Ruby would hold the weapon tightly and fondly in her grasp.

this had become a regular occurrence, 1 time a month the two of you would fight in a mock battle to bear witness to improvements and acknowledge the unfortunate flaws carried within battle. something to iron out, to improvise against each other's strengths and destroy each other's weaknesses through one use of a battle.

it had worked wonders for both of you before, it shall continue to do so now and considering the timing of the bout, it was the perfect time to engage in this.  the fight was about to begin, and there was going to be no drawing.

Ruby wins, or (Y/n) wins. it was as simple as that.

but the best part? both parties were more than eager to win against the other.

'ready?'

"ready when you are (Y/n)."

'good. try to keep up.'

"i should say the same to you."

you both remined there, ready.

"if i win, you bake me cookies and a chocolate cake."

'if i win, you bake me cookies. deal?'

Ruby gulped, she still wasn't that good at baking...

guess she just has to win then.

"deal."

--------

hello! i kid you not, this chapter threw me for a loop. i have been sitting here for 4 straight hours like:

'uh...what do i write?'

as you can tell, i found out what to right.

oh yeah! there's the lore reason behind why (Y/n)'s semblance won't work for his voice box!

anyway...

1. the result of the battle will be acknowledge next chapter.

2. Ruby knew (Y/n) was in the doubles the moment his team won the team battle.

3. she wondered why he didn't tell her.

4. she doesn't really mind though.

5. (Y/n)'s parents are currently on a mission, which is why they aren't here.

6.  (Y/n) paid for Ruby's and his own dinner during the break, although she offered to pay instead.

7. Weiss would be lying if she said that (Y/n) and Ruby hasn't grown on her.

8. Blake and (Y/n) are a little iffy with each other still, as foxes CAN hunt cats. (although they aren't really interested normally!) but they are friends!

9. Claire went back to her team's dorm room for a moment, hence why she wasn't in the training room.

now then....

who wants to guess who's joining (Y/n) for the doubles round?

i will not be telling you who until the fight happens! so get your bets in now folks...
