Out of Tune

"Here."

She was looking at her hand, so I followed her gaze and saw a familiar strap. It's the one she's been trying to give me, the strap she got when she asked for my help.

"It's yours," she said, and she moved the strap closer to me.

She was looking at me now, and there was hope in her gaze.

"So..." Pauna niya. "Tomorrow is the day."

Tomorrow is the day we perform—in front of the whole school and the vice principal, who's been doubting us and saying things about our abilities. It's finally our time to prove him wrong. Finally, the moment to take a step closer to our dream.

"I'm nervous," she said suddenly.

I looked at her. She was still looking straight ahead.

"Are you nervous, Wynther?" Baling niya sa akin.

"I'm not," I replied, which made her chuckle softly.

"Buti ka pa," she said quietly.

Napalunok ako. "It's because I believe," I said.

Lumingon siya sa akin ng may pagtataka. "Believe?" tanong niya.

Tumango ako. "I believe in our sound. I believe... in your voice. I believe it will reach everyone."

Just like how you reach mine.

A lot of emotions swirled in her eyes—too many to name, but the ones I could see clearly were joy and shock.

She smiled warmly, and it spread inside my chest. "Thank you," she said. "As always, you manage to give me the encouragement I need."

"Good luck to us," she added, her smile growing wider.

I stared at her, especially captivated by her sweet smile.

"Y-yeah," I stammered, then cleared my throat. "Good luck to us."

And without even knowing why, I smiled back at her.

The next day, maaga akong dumating sa clubroom namin, pero kahit anong aga ko, may mga nauna pa rin sa akin.

Elliot, Rive, and Zeira were already there when I entered the room. I checked my watch and saw that it was still eight in the morning. Mamaya pang hapon ang performance namin. Masyado silang excited.

Nilingon nila ako at binati. I greeted them back and immediately scanned the room, looking for Luna, but she wasn't there.
