"No signal"—the two words you don't want to see flashing across your phone's screen while lost in a huge town on your first day there. So as the very wise person I was, I started to jump up and down in order to reach a signal, but it was no use.
"Jess I highly doubt that's going to help", my dear friend Alex (who I kind of wanted to hit right then and there) said while giggling at the funny sight of me making a fool of myself in the (thank god) more peaceful part of Seoul we were currently in. Or at least I was hoping we were still in Seoul. It was definitely not a good idea to leave our dorm and "go on a spontaneous adventure to get to know the city we will be spending the next year in" as said with the words of the persuasive Alex. To explain why exactly two teenage girls from New York are in Seoul, we would have to go back a year. For my sixteenth birthday a bit over a year ago, my parents had given me a chance to go and be an exchange student to whatever country I wanted. And as Alex's parents are very easy to persuade (and Alex is excellent at persuading people) we were soon planning our year together abroad. And also as Alex is  like, one-twelfth Korean, and "wanted to see the country of her ancestors" we decided to go and spend our year in Seoul, as it really spoke to me too with its beautiful scenery and the wonderful city lights. I have always found comfort in cities, and the fact that they never seem to sleep. So that is how we ended up in Seoul, with absolutely zero language skills ("we'll pick it up quickly" was the lie we both told ourselves so we wouldn't have to take extra school lessons) and a phone with no signal.

Someone behind us said something in (most likely) korean, making both me and Alex jump slightly. We turned around to see a boy possibly our age.
"Who is that and what the hell did he say?" Alex said to me, looking extremely confused.
"I have no idea, I don't know any more Korean than you!" I said slightly annoyed. "He's kind of hot though", I added after taking a better look at the boy. He had dark brown messy wavy hair and was dressed in black jeans and a sweatshirt. His eyes were big, and I could have thought about their beauty a lot more if it weren't for the inconvenience of the situation.

"Thank you, you don't look bad either", the boy said with a slightly smug smile on his lips. "So, are you lost or not?"

While Alex bursted out laughing hysterically, I turned around to face the boy.

"Yeah, we are. My phone won't work and we don't speak Korean so we're kind of in a bad place right now", I explained while trying to keep my cool (which was extremely hard by the way)

"Well good for you I was just passing through here, and I speak perfect English" the boy said, seemingly amused. The boy was good looking, but he was starting to get on my nerves. Our distress seemed to amuse him, which was something that I personally couldn't stand.
"Okay cool, could you just tell us which way to go to end up in Gung-dong, we need to get back to our dorm as soon as possible" I said, eager to get rid of the stranger and take a relaxing bath in my new room. I needed a break, possibly seasoned with bubbles and vanilla scented candles.
"Oh, you go to the School of Performing Arts", he said, like he finally understood our deal. "You're the exchange students, right?" Oh dear god, please don't say he goes to the same school.
"Yes, we are", I said, taking a deep breath. "Now can you tell which way to go?"
"Oh yeah, sure, you've just got to go straight ahead and then when you can see a park for children you need to turn right", he explained and I gave out a sigh of relief. I thanked him quickly and went to collect my still highly amused friend from a bench nearby. We had walked for a while when I heard a voice shout from behind.
"Hey, you! Lost girl!" he tried to get my attention, and I turned around to hear him out. "What's your name?"

"Jess", I shouted back, turning back around to face the road."I'm Hansol", he yelled out. I didn't even bother turning back around to face him, just put my hand out and waved at him. My feet were killing me from all the walking and I was hungry. Great way to start the year here.
