Chapter 40: Conflicting interests

"You know about other worlds here?"

"Well, it's rather common knowledge actually. I mean, Tenkai and Genkai are already two different worlds."

"The realm of the gods and the realm of mortals," he muttered.

I nodded. "You already know about that then?"

"I read it in a book," he answered.

"Yes, well strictly speaking those are the only two commonly known different worlds, but well I sort of figured that if two worlds already exist why not more?"

"Huh," he seemed sort of dumbfounded.

After a moment of pause he finally begins to explain more of what he means. "My reincarnation here wasn't exactly clean," he admits. "When I was reborn in the dungeon it seemed my soul split among several parts. I've been working to get them back, but..."

"So much has been going on lately it's been a struggle?" I guessed at his meaning.

He nodded.

"And you want my help...?" I confirm.

He nods.

I frown slightly. "I'm not going to say no...but can I ask, are these pieces really so strong you need my help? Or no, would I even be of any help in the first place?" I couldn't help but ask.

Rimuru was among the strongest people I knew, not counting gods probably number 2. I couldn't even imagine a battle where he needed my help aside from me just acting as a meat shield for him.

But knowing Rimuru, he'd probably frown at that sort of suggestion. So I couldn't imagine him asking me to do something like that.

But that's rather off topic. I slowly watch his expression as he makes a face. I suppose he's trying to explain what it exactly was that he needed.

"...I...no you're right, strictly speaking I could probably grab the majority of them all on my own." he admitted.

"Then...?"

"God you're dense," Ava commented.

"I said shut it."

"It's hard when you're being a moron," she didn't have a head, but somehow I felt that if she did she would be shaking it.

"..." Rimuru was looking away, seemingly embarrassed about something.

"Ah," I finally understood after a moment of thought. "You want me to be moral support?" I asked.

"Haha, something like that," he laughed nervously. "Truth be told, my soul contains portions of my memories and personality," he added. "I haven't experienced it yet, but the pieces left are rather large. I could get lost in thought, so having someone there to bring me back to my senses would be helpful if I get too lost, you know?"

"I see, alright then," I nodded. "I'll go with you,"

"Thank you," he smiled.

"...yeah," I nodded. "But one more thing I want to confirm." I said.

He looked up at me. "Earlier you mentioned that you could grab the majority of your soul pieces on your own...what do you mean by that,"

"...There is a missing piece," he admitted. "For the most part I can sense where all the pieces are, and the majority are in the dungeon..." he added. "But putting all of them together...isn't enough. It would still be incomplete by about 23%"

"23%?" I thought for a moment. "You're sure that your soul is 100% transferred."

"...no," Rimuru admitted. "I can't say with certainty that some of my soul wasn't lost in the process of being transferred." He seemed a little shaken. "For all I know right now...there's almost a quarter of my memories and personality I'll never find again." He looked down into his lap. Clearly deep in thought.
