~ Chapter 18 ~

Chapter 18

"Death Note?" Phil asked in confusion.

"Whoever's name is written in the Death Note will die in 40 seconds from a heart attack. Details of how the suspect dies must be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds otherwise the victim will die of a heart attack." Dan explained, reciting something he'd learned over and over.

"Oh my god ... how the hell did you get this?"Phil asked in confusion.

"It was dropped on earth by a Shinigami." Dan explained, flushing as he realised how weird that sounded.

"Shinigami?" Phil asked in confusion.

"It translates to 'Death God'" Dan filled in, still blushing.

Phil raised an eyebrow, not sure if he could believe it or not. "Um ... okay?" He asked looking unsure.

Dan sighed. "Once I picked up the notebook, I gained ownership over it. The Shinigami came to see me after I found it and he watches over me until I give up ownership or die." Dan continued to explain.

Phil went a little pale. There was a Death God watching over Dan? He could die? "Watching you? How do you mean?" Phil asked curiously. 

"Whoever touches the Death Note is able to see them ... he's in this room. His name is Ryuk and he's a pain my ass. You don't have to see him but if it gives you confirmation of everything it might be easier to believe me." Dan bit his lip nervously. He sounded crazy - he just hoped Phil believed him.

Phil hesitated - a Death God had been living with them and he had no idea. The thought of seeing 'him' freaked Phil out a bit but he also wanted to believe Dan wasn't making things up. "Alright then. Let me see him." Phil breathed out. Dan smiled a little and brought Phil's hand to the Death Note. Phil sucked in a breath before trailing his eyes around the room.

He nearly jumped out of his skin when he saw a creepy creature staring at them from across the room. "Hi." Ryuk said, waving at Phil.

"Oh my god." Phil breathed, looking from Ryuk to Dan. "So you're a Shinigani?" Phil asked.

"It's 'Shinigami' and yes." Ryuk replied, as if he was bored. 

"Don't mind him, he's annoying, rude and a dick." Dan muttered.

"Should you really be saying that to a god of death?" Phil whispered.

"I don't really give a fuck. He's a prick and he knows it." Dan huffed, scowling at Ryuk.

Ryuk cackled, "I can't say that I'm an angel." He smirked and disappeared though the wall. 

"Wow Dan ... I don't know what to say." Phil stated in shock.

"I didn't either when I first saw him and found out what the Death Note could do. I just wanted to make the world a better place." Dan explained.

"I know you did Dan. I knew that was the mindset of Kira ..." Phil trailed off, he suddenly remembered there was a second Kira. "Dan, do you know who the second Kira is? You don't have to tell me but if there are more of these Death Notes out there then things could get dangerous." Phil asked.

"Yes I know who the second Kira is." Dan sighed and Phil's eyes went wide a little.

"Wait ... he asked me to appear on TV." Phil whispered, looking unsure.

Dan's eyes flew open, "Oh no, we only agreed on that before I knew you were L, I promise. Besides if I already knew who you were, why would I need to get you on TV when I could kill you?" Dan asked, frowning at the 'kill' part. Phil relaxed and nodded.

"So you've met the second Kira?" Phil asked in concern. "They didn't hurt you did they?"

Dan smiled, "No they didn't ... in fact it's PJ."

"PJ?!" Phil exclaimed in shock but also finally understanding why they spent a lot more time together in the last few weeks. His remaining jealousy began to fade a bit at that. 

Dan chuckled, "Yeah - and don't worry, he doesn't want to kill you either." 

"Well that's good to know." Phil smiled.

"There's a few things that I've sacrificed for this though." Dan sighed sadly, the small smile slipping from his face.

"What are you talking about? What did you do?" Phil asked in worry. 

"Well ... after death I go to neither Heaven nor Hell ... it's sort of an in-between, I'm not sure how it works. I can also give up  ownership whenever I want but when I do, all memories of the Death Note will be wiped." Dan explained.

"DAN! How could you sacrifice that?" Phil asked with a scared expression.

"It's fine Phil - I'll be dead anyway. Besides I don't believe in heaven nor hell, maybe I'll just be at peace?" Dan suggested and Phil sighed, shaking his head. He pulled Dan into a hug, kissing his shoulder in the process. 

"You're so reckless sometimes." Phil sighed but gave Dan a fond look.

"Phil ... I'm going to give up the Death Note for you - so is PJ. We're done with killing, besides PJ fancies Chris." Dan smirked.

"Oh Dan ... thank you. By the way Chris is crazy about PJ." He smirked back and Dan's eyes went wide. 

"Great, then they'll be perfect together." Dan grinned, pulling Phil into a passionate kiss. Phil returned it eagerly. Although the circumstances were a little odd, he was glad he finally got to be with Dan. Phil knew that he was no longer fit to be 'L' since his feelings got in the way. Living with Dan over the years had softened him. Phil decided he'd step down and take whatever verbal abuse Mr Howell and the others wanted to give him. Besides, Phil heard he had an impressive heir - M. 

Both boys pulled away with a sigh and stared at each other for a little while - savouring the moment. "Ahem, when are we going to get this over with? I've had my fun in this world and this sentiment is making me sick." Ryuk scoffed from the doorway and Dan turned round to glare at him. 

"I've never really liked you Ryuk, but thanks for your help ... when you could be bothered." Dan grumbled reluctantly.

"Ugh, you're too soft ... and I thought things would only get more interesting." Ryuk sighed in annoyance. "Oh well, just say 'I give up ownership of the Death Note' and we can be done with it."

"Will Phil's memories be wiped too?" Dan asked curiously.

"Yes." Ryuk snapped in impatience. 

"At least you don't have to remember me as a cold-blooded killer." Dan smiled sadly, turning to Phil.

"Hang on, if I forget this then I'll continue in the Kira case. Dan you're a suspect." Phil explained in panic. 

"It's okay Phil. The Death Note is gone so there's no evidence to convict me. You'll have to prove it right?" Dan asked, although there was a slight tremble in his voice.

"Dan ... I'm going to resign. Right now, I'm done being L and it's time for my next successor. I've not got the emotional balance for this job any more. All of us come from a private academy and we're trained not to feel but you've changed that in me Dan. I need to take a step back. I might not know why I stepped down after this but at least we'll be together ... right?" Phil asked, looking scared of losing Dan. "But if we forget then I'll forget ever kissing you." Phil panicked once again.

"Your memories will be altered. You'll still remember everything but the Death Note and the confession." Ryuk butted in, looking extremely bored.

"I'm going to go sort some things out and once they're done we'll do it together okay?" Phil asked, smiling softly at Dan.

"Ok. I trust you." Dan grinned. 

"I love you." 

"I love you too." 

"Yuck."
