James Potter and Sirius Black stumble into a seemingly empty compartment on the Hogwarts Express, the two boys had only known each other for ten minutes but were almost certain they'd be in trouble the moment they reached the castle; While attempting to find an empty compartment a sickly, timid looking boy with greasy black hair had tripped and knocked the rectangular glasses off James' face causing the glass in the right eye to crack, Sirius, wanting to stand up for his new friend, went ahead and fired every jinx he had ever heard at the pale boy which resulted in him tangled in a full-body bind with grotesque boils popping up all over his face.
The two had rushed into the compartment still laughing, far too occupied to notice the small boy asleep in the corner, his robes draped over him covering most of his face.
Almost immediately after the boys had settled down, a rather round boy shuffled in with an armful of sweets, without any introduction Sirius invited the stout boy to join them. As the boy moved into the compartment he introduced himself as Peter and the other two boys followed in suit.
Peter deposited his sweets on the floor of the compartment and asked Sirius politely to move his legs from the seat next to him as he had noticed the boy in the corner meaning there was no room for him to sit elsewhere.
Peter inclined his head to the sleeping boy as an explanation and reached down to begin tearing open the sweets. The eyes of Sirius and James now fell on the huddled boy on the seat next to James.
"Was he here the whole time?" James asked loudly, "because I didn't see him." He inclined.
"Shh, you'll wake him, he looks like he could do with some sleep..." Sirius exclaimed noticing the dark circles under his eyes.
This boy was just as pale and sickly looking as the boy they had met before, possibly even worse, his sandy hair stuck up in every direction and his skin looked almost grey, as though he had been ill for a very long time, Sirius looked concerned for the boy, James still wore a look of confusion and Peter seems almost oblivious to the whole conversation as he was now opening his third chocolate frog while looking cautiously at an off-White coloured jelly bean.
The movement of the train had caused the robes covering the boy to slip slightly revealing a scar reaching from above his left eyebrow, over the bridge of his nose and down his right cheek, the scar shon pink against his papery skin and gave him the appearance of someone who had lived and fought many years over the age of eleven.
The train gave a sudden jolt as it turned a corner and the robes fell completely off the boy showing him curled up with his knees tight to his chest, already dressed in his ill-fitting school uniform.
Sirius quickly grabbed the robes and made to drape them back over the boy opposite him who already seemed to look cold without them, but the sudden change must have roused the boy as he began to stir and open his eyes.
The boy flinched as he rubbed his eyes then looked momentarily confused before a startled look crossed his face and he pulled his knees tighter into his chest hanging his head as if trying to hide his face.
Sirius held out the robes he had retrieved from the floor to the boy.
"I think these are your's...don't worry, we don't bite." The boy took the robes shyly and muttered a thank you.
"Well, we don't bite but I'm not sure about Peter, I wouldn't suggest getting between him and his chocolate." James added in mock seriousness. "I'm James, by the way, James Potter."
"Sirius Black" Sirius commented. "And that's Peter...something-or-another, he never said his last name."
"Pettigrew." Peter piped up.
The boy seemed to relax seeing the faces around him were smiling and friendly.
"Remus Lupin." Said the boy with a small smile.
"Pray tell, Remus, why were you asleep?" James asked completely disregarding the fact that only moments ago Remus seemed afraid to show his face, he was, in fact, still sitting staring at his lap.
"Oh...um...I...I guess I just..." He stuttered
Sirius relived him of having to give an answer by speaking up. "It's okay, we get it, you look tired."
"Yeah we um...got here early, like, really early, so I fell asleep instead of reading seeing as I didn't get much sleep last night-we were traveling all night to get here." His voice was growing gradually more confident as he spoke. Remus looked up and saw James' glasses askew on his face as he squinted to see through the cracked glass. "Would-would you like me to fix your glasses for you, James?" He asked cautiously.
"Oh, yeah, okay then." James replied cheerfully as he took off his glasses while Remus pulled out his wand from a battered trunk clearly containing all of his belongings.
"Oculus Reparo." Remus spoke tapping James' glasses with the wand held in his shaking hand, the glass repaired itself instantly, leaving no sign of damage.
"Thanks." James said putting his glasses back on. "They were knocked off my face by some idiot kid out in the corridor."
"Yeah, but he's a mess now." Peter added as Sirius sniggered. "He was still on the floor when I came in, I don't think anyone bothered to help him."
"We are going to be in so much trouble." James said looking at Sirius, there was a hint of proud satisfaction in his voice.
"You'll cover for us right?" Sirius asked Remus. "We don't want to be in trouble before we even get sorted, they won't know what house to take points from!" He added sounding almost amused.
"Yeah," Remus said with a smile. "I've got a certain way with teachers I can't quite explain." He finished, looking up completely at last.
James threw an arm around his shoulder. "I think we are going to be very good friends."
