“You useless child!” I heard someone yell

I opened my eyes and turned around to see where it was coming from. The place I was at was just black space that I was floating in. When I started to focus on where I had heard someone say that a room came to view and I fell to the floor. I looked around after I stood up straight and I saw a little kid standing with her back to the wall and with a lady yelling at her.

“This seems familiar.” I thought

I watched as the lady yelled another few words.

“Why can't you just do as you’re told for once!? I give you the most simple instructions and you can’t even listen to them!” The lady yelled

“I’m sorry mistress.” The kid muttered with her hair covering her face

“I swear I never should’ve taken you in!” The lady yelled raising her hand

I ran forward out of instinct and tried to shield the kid from getting hit but the woman's hand just passed right through my body as if I wasn’t there. I turned around after I heard the slap and saw the little girl on the floor. Blood was dripping onto the floor then it hit me.

“This is my past.” I muttered

I stepped aside and tried to look away.

“I don’t want to watch what I couldn’t shield myself from.” I thought to myself

I looked in the opposite direction from where it happened but the vision only shifted in that direction. I looked away again but it only moved to where I was looking.

“I won’t watch.” I said closing my eyes but there it was the vision of the women picking up the kid and slamming her against the wall.

I opened my eyes to see the women walking away. A puddle of blood was forming around the girl. Only then did I notice which part of my life this was.

The little girl sat up and pulled a knife out of her shoulder. Her hair was still covering her face but I could see the blood dripping from her face and the tears mixed with it. The only visible part of her face was her mouth and if she didn’t look like she was crying or in pain just based on her facial expression. If she didn’t have tears streaming down her face you wouldn’t even think she was in pain.

“I can’t wait till I get out of here.” The girl said wiping the tears from her eyes

“How much longer do I have to act like this?” she asked herself as she stood up

“You have to deal with it till you learn to let others take the punishment.” A little girl with blue eyes and white hair said walking into the room

“Pearl.” I thought looking at her

“Well, Shadow, I know you like to take the punishments of others to protect them but you don’t get a break from them anymore. Everytime someone does something wrong you alway have to protect them. I can’t bear to lose you, Shadow.” Pearl said gently moving the hair of the little girl’s face

“That’s right, I was known as Shadow by the other kids.” I thought

“I know but I’d rather be the one getting hurt than the other kids.” Shadow said sighing

“Let me guess, you’re done with having to fake crying.” Pearl said chuckling

“Ya, I don’t feel pain anymore but she doesn’t stop till she sees tears.” Shadow said chuckling

“Not being able to feel pain is bad. If you get hurt you might not know it.” Pearl said chuckling

“I know but I’d rather have it be that than have the younger kids getting hurt.” Shadow said
