Chapter 38: Cheap Tricks

She nodded, "Call," she said. I traded in the jack hoping for either another 5 or another king. She passed my new card and I picked it up.

I frowned for a moment before wiping it off my face. A king. I had a full house. I placed the cards face down onto the table and gave my attention to Sophia.

She traded in two cards, without even a hint as to what she was thinking throughout the entire process. It was unsettling. As I was watching it I couldn't help but wonder.

Just what had happened for her to become like this? Normally people couldn't help but make reflexive motions when some events happened, whether it be a sigh, a twitch of the eye or some other minute detail to give just a hint as to what they were feeling. But for someone to become so detached that they stop showing any such signs of emotion at all, well that was certainly a scary thought. Even seasoned adventurers rarely ever reached such a state. Or rather, it'd be better to say that it was those types who died out faster than anyone.

A lack of concern or fear may seem like a good thing, but it could easily lead you right down the path to your death. A double edged sword, never hesitating in moments of importance, but never stopping when it counts either.

So how is it that she's made it as far as she has? Just what is it about her that lets her survive? Everyone had something that let them survive in this world. No one got to the level she was at by coincidence or accident. Especially if you lacked a survival instinct like she does.

I leaned back and took a breath relaxing myself. Even now I couldn't stop myself from making reflexive movements...

"Your bid," she said.

I placed in two blue chips. "20" I said.

"Raise, twenty five," she said without missing a beat, placing her black chip in.

"..." I gave pause. For a moment I wondered...

"Call." I put five whites in.

She nodded. "Alright what have you got?"

I placed my hand on the table. "Full house," I said. She showed no sign of surprise or anxiety.

She merely nodded and played her own hand. "Full house, two sixes and three aces." I frowned.

She wordlessly collected her pieces.

"Wait," I said. She stopped, "What's your game here?" I asked.

She shrugged her shoulders, "what are you talking about? You'll have to be more specific than that," She said.

"...haaa, whatever," I just shook my head.

"Ante," She said. We placed one white piece in.

I watched her carefully as she shuffled the deck. She placed the cards before me, "cut," she said.

I did as she asked and she dealt the cards out.

I picked them up for just a moment before placing them back down, face down. I had nothing. No cards worth a thing. Jack of spade, two and three of hearts, eight of diamonds and an ace of clubs.

I squinted at the cards and sighed. "I fold," I said. This hand would get me nothing. Especially if she was doing what I thought she was.

"...alright," she said and began to collect the two chips.

This was...an issue. I thought as I stared over at her side of the table. She now had almost all of the chips leaving me with just one of each.

"That concludes that," she said with closed eyes. "Now to answer your question," she said, staring at me.
