Chapter 35: War Game. Part 1: Final Preparations.

Start from the beginning

Rimuru was oh so very strange to me. Logically from every angle, something had to be wrong with her. She was a monster, a monster so powerful that even Loki familia too caution when dealing with her. She showed a level of inteligence beyond that of most humans, as if she weren't strange enough for a monster, and yet even when counting all of those things together, it simply pales in comparison to her unnatural kindness and friendliness.

Despite Hestia revealing her as a monster on the 18th floor and having us outcast her, she still easily forgave us all protected us, and trained us to fight against the Apollo familia without a complaint...no beyond not complaining about it, she seemed to enjoy helping us.

She even saved me from Soma Familia...She was just so strange.

And now sitting across from me playing games with me in order to help me even further...

All because Amaterasu had told her too.

I stared down at the board and made my move.

She responded in kind. Her move was strange, the way she played. It was as if she were showing me the way. As if to lightly rebuke me for each mistake. Each flawed plan I made was countered and forced me to create some sort of new attack. She never attacked me herself though. Passively waiting for each and every move I made. With each move she strengthened her own defenses, blocking off my plans of attack

"Can I ask you something," I said as I moved my piece.

"Sure," She nodded.

"Why this game? It's good for strategy and stuff but the war game will be much harder..." I asked.

It was true. As difficult as beating Rimuru in this game may have been and as useful as it may have been to me for developing staregical skills, the war game wasn't way looser than this game in terms of rule set. So broad that games like this with stricter strategy might restrict my thinking...

"Well, it mainly depends on the type of war game played, but yeah you're right for the most part." Rimuru nodded. "The war game is unlikely to be as forgiving as this game." she added. "And truthfully I could rattle on about all the potential benefits, but ultimately it comes down to just one thing."

I stared at her hand as she made her move with the other.

"One?" I asked.

She nodded. "It's fun." She laughed slightly.

I blinked. "Huh?"

"Look as things stand currently you guys are all too uptight. It's good to be focused, but if you guys fight too hard before the actual battle it'd be bad right?"

"..."

"And out of everyone here, that's true of you the most, Lily."

I couldn't say anything to that. Was that really ture?

"It may be because of you're intelligence, but you seem to be thinking more than anyone here and because of that, you're the most stressed, isn't that right?"

"..." again I could say nothing to that.

I moved my piece.

She moved hers. She had begun to take my pieces one by one now. Stripping away my weak attack with an espcieally strong one of her own. One she had set up while I was busy trying to find my own attack.

It was hard, I was taking some pieces, but by the end my king was completely exposed, and she had several attackers trained on it.

I stopped moving. I stared at the board. Intently. Thinking thinking thinking...
