Soon, word spread around the building about what was found below.
A few of the scientists, and even Bert had braved going in with masks - trying to salvage any paper trails they could and scan in copies.
Whoever did this, they not only had RDA permission, but they had the green light to abandon all of this and erase whatever tracks connected them to it.
To treat your clans ancestors as if they were mannequins you store in the back room of some sweat shop.
Although everyone's staying signed out of the Avatars - you still check up on yours as often as you can. Your child still grows within her, and you don't want them to feel abandoned.
"Norm and Max couldn't sleep, so whenever they weren't tending to Spider - they decided to get into some tinkering." Trudy adjusts the way she sits, bouncing her baby boy in her lap and kissing his head.
"They were taking apart old Mech suits - they wouldn't tell me for what, but they're already on track to finish it this afternoon."
"I couldn't either. I kept jolting around, and eventually set up a hammock on the other end of the bedroom so I'd stop waking Jake. I'm glad they found something to do; though. I couldn't even distract myself with reading. All I see are those destroyed faces over and over again in the back of my mind."
"How's he holding up?"
"He got maybe a few hours, and then got up to go shower. I knows he's conflicted in this."
She sighs, broken-hearted and upset.
"I can't imagine anyone wouldn't be."
You can barely stay still in your spinning office chair - anxious and desperate to get answers on something you may never know.
"You want some Coffee? I'm gonna make some."
"Sure, I'll never turn it down."
As you go to stand at the maker, and get it to start - you click on the comms around your neck and call out for Grace.
She's been there all morning, speaking with the clan. At least it isn't unusual for her to go out so far with her Human form - and Bert gave her a ride out to lesson the travel time.
"Grace, how is everything?"
She takes a minute to get back to you, and your heart skips a beat at the way she speaks.
"Tsu'tey is very passionate about this.. that's how I'll put it, anyway. Eytukan wants us to find who did it, but I've already explained our life spans aren't as long as theirs - whoever it was, they're dead by now.
Mo'at is off, currently - said she needed some time with Eywa to process this. Neytiri is just as upset, but she wants to help Tsu'tey retrieve the bodies later.
It'll probably be a few days, though. They all need time to process this."
"Yeah.. A few days is hardly enough."
"Their main worry is getting the bodies and re-burying them right now. I explained to Mo'at that while they were injected with substance to prevent decay for longer periods of time - they will still eventually be with the ground and part of Eywa again."
"Bert messaged me earlier... said he found severed queues in the back of the main room. I guess they were studying how that worked, trying to replicate it within humans - maybe?"
"We'll go through the research when I'm back. Right now, the clan has more questions than I can answer - and they know I'm trying my best to figure out why and how. Now we just... wait. See how Mo'at wants us to proceed."
"Are they upset with us?"
"As a species? They always were, but us individually as the Avatars they've trained to join their clan, and see first hand that we will die for them? No.
There are some residual feelings, but they know we aren't the ones who did this, and respect that we're refraining from using the Avatars until they can come to a decision."
