The hut with our washrooms was pitch black so I used the stall with the window. I stood frozen staring at the test in my hand. My heart thumped in my ears as the questions flashed through my mind.
"There's no way," I whispered to myself. I sat on the wooden bench in the little room and thought for a few moments. Finally, after a few tears and a near panic attack I worked up the nerve.
I used two of the stick tests and then put them face down on the bench. I sat beside them and waited. And waited. And waited. The stars shone clearly in the dark sky. The wind was in the trees and everything was peaceful. Except for me. My insides turned with anxiety. During that time someone else had come in. I pulled my feet up and waited until they were gone. When whoever had left I turned one stick over. Tears pooled in my eyes.
"No," I whispered to myself and turned the other one over. The sticks dropped onto the wood surface with a clack when I stood up. My back hit the wall as I put my hands over my face and cried. I checked the tests again. The results hadn't changed. Both of them boasted a "+".
"What am I gonna do?" I whispered to myself.
I was terrified. There was no way Newt and I could raise a baby in the glade! We would need medical care, and stuff, and school for when the child got older. How would a small infant survive in a place where death was the family next door?!
I stuffed the sticks in my pocket and walked back to my hut. The entire two minute walk back I kept turning over ideas in my mind about how to tell Newt. I couldn't hide the fact that I was carrying our child hidden from him for long.
Newt was still asleep so I crawled back in bed. My hands were pressed to my stomach as I stared up at the ceiling. Everything was about to change.
When I woke up the next morning I remembered the night before. I rolled over on my side and put a hand to my stomach. "Good morning little one," I whispered. "Please be nice to me today?" The baby didn't keep their end of the bargain. I threw up three times before breakfast.
Newt and I parted way to take care of our jobs so then I started my first day of trying to hide it from everyone. My first job was checking on Alby. He wasn't any better than the day before. Alby's temperature was still high and he vibrated. Sometimes he would groan. I put wet towels around him and poured a bit of water down his throat. The girl was still passed out. Clint was wiping her face with a cloth when I walked in.
"No change?" I asked, giving him a dish of clean water.
"Nope. She'll come out of it when she's ready I guess," he replied. "Speaking of sick. I saw you throw up behind the washroom this morning. You feeling okay?"
I took the old bowl of water from him, "Yea, Just dealing with some anxiety. It really messes with my stomach."
"Oh I'm sorry to hear that. Did you talk to Newt? He can give you some time off you know. You've worked every day since you got here."
"Yeah," I half-lied. Newt knew about my anxiety problems.
Clint pointed to a shelf on the wall, "There's some lavender oil over there. Take it and use it on your pillow. It will help."
The idea of anything scented made me want to throw up again. "Thanks clint."
I went back to my work sorting out a crate of bandages. After I finished that I went and got water for the med-hut. When I got back, she was gone.
I found chuck outside with Thomas and Minho.
"Has anyone seen the new girl?" I asked.
Chuck pointed, "Girls are awesome!"
The four of us saw what was happening. A bunch of the gladers had gathered at the base of the watchtower and were holding various objects over their heads. Someone on the tower was throwing stuff down at them.
"Leave me alone!" A girls voice yelled.
The four of us jogged over. I was nearly hit in the head with a round shape when Gally yelled, " Hey throw one more of those things-" He was pounded by something before he could finish his sentence.
"What happened?" Thomas asked.
"I don't think she likes us very much," Newt said as he crouched under a crate lid winston held.
Daniel hopped aside as a rock flew past him, "I'll say. That chick is vicious."
"What do you want from me?" The girl asked, throwing something.
"Hey we just want to talk!" I said.
"I'm warning you!" She chucked a large piece of metal down.
"Take cover y'all," Frypan stated. I laughed.
"Hey! Hey, woah! It's Thomas!" Thomas yelled. The girl peered over the platforms edge.
"I'm gonna come up okay?"
The girl sat back away from the edge once more.
"Should one of us come with you?" I asked.
Thomas looked over and back up at the tower, "Just me."
A few minutes later Thomas stood up and looked down at us.
"What's going on up there?" Gally asked, rather annoyed.
"Is she coming down?" Newt asked.
"Uh," Thomas looked over his shoulder. "Hey listen you guys just give us a second okay?"
"Alright. Come on back to work," Newt said.
"Is that what all girls are like?" Frypan stared up at the tower.
I slapped Frypan, "I'm right here!"
Frypan laughed, "I didn't mean you Zoe."
That night I went to check on alby. He shook from head-to-toe, was drenched in sweat, and made soft vocalizations.
Newt looked down at him, "he's getting worse."
"Well he ain't getting no better," Jeff stated.
I nodded and put a new cloth on Alby's forehead. Thomas and Teresa walked in.
"Hey," Thomas greeted. Teresa had two objects in her hands.
"Teresa was sent with these. We think it might help Alby," He took the tubes from her and passed them to my husband.
"What are they?" Jeff asked.
"They're injectors," I said, taking one in my hand. A tube inside was filled with blue liquid. "Maybe they're for Alby?" I removed the cap to reveal a needle.
"Woah," Newt said. "We don't even know what this stuff is. We don't know who sent it. Or why it came up here with you." He motioned to Teresa with the injector. I'd never seen Newt this standoffish. He was ready to tear Teresa apart.
"For all we know this could kill him," He added.
"He's already dying," I said. I hadn't wanted to face the truth.
"Look at him," Thomas pointed at alby's shaking body.
"I don't see how it make things worse," I put my two cents out there.
Alby made a gurgled rasp. The black veins had spread more even in the last moment.
"Alright," Newt handed the injector to Thomas. "Do it."
Thomas leaned over Alby to jab him with the needle. Alby shot up and grabbed Thomas by the neck, "You shouldn't be here!" He growled. Newt tried to pull thomas out of his grasp. Jeff and Clint rushed to hold down Alby's arms. Teresa took the needle from me and slammed it into Alby's chest. He went still.
Thomas rubbed his neck as we watched.
"Well that worked," Jeff said.
"Okay," Newt said out of breath. "From now on someone stays here and watches him around the clock.
"Hey," Gally walked in. "Sundown greenie. Time to go."
Thomas frowned.
