Lanzhan walked across the property towards the barn. The others were already making their way inside. He knew that soon, Weiying would also be arriving, and then the ceremony would commence. His blood was pounding in his ears, but he wasn’t afraid. A little nervous, maybe, but mostly he was...hopeful.

“Lan Wangji!”

“Lan Wangji!”

He looked up, and saw that Song Lan was flagging him down. Weiying’s uncle stood off from the barn near a smaller shed. Lanzhan hesitated for a moment, reluctant to be anywhime near him. Weiying had refused to tell anyone what Song Lan had said to him, so he had no idea what had gone down between them. But Lanzhan didn’t trust him, and he didn’t want to be near him. However, he didn’t see a way to get out of talking with him now.

“Can I help you?” Lanzhan asked as he drew near.

Song Lan tipped his head towards the Hed. “Come with me. I want to talk to you for a moment.”

Song Lan started for the shed, and Lanzhan narrowed his eyes suspiciously at his retreating back. But he followed him inside. It was dim in the shed, smelling of oil and hay, and Lanzhan took care not to brush up against anything and muck up his tux.

“What do you want?” Lanzhan demanded to know without preamble.

“Straight to the point,” Song Lan remarked. “I like that.”

Lanzhan said nothing, and only waited for Song Lan to tell him why he was here. The man tucked his hands behind his back and coolly appraised Lanzhan for a moment.

“Weiying is never to hear about any of this,” Song Lan said in a low voice. “And neither is anyone else. Do you understand me?”

Lanzhan resisted the urge to swallow as anxiety pooled like ice water in his belly. This couldn’t be good.

“I got a phone call from a lawyer named Wen Qing” Song Lan went on, pacing the floor in front of Lanzhan. “I was surprised to learn that you were applying for a marriage visa, Lanzhan. It seems that hasn’t come up at all since you and my niece announced your engagement.”

Lanzhan gnashed his teeth together as anger surged through him. “It was no one else’s business,” he hissed.

Song Lan went on as if he hadn’t heard Lanzhan. “Ms. Wen Qing informed me that if you were lying, He would send my nephew to prison, and that you would be deported.”

“What did you do?” Lanzhan ground out from between clenched teeth, his hands curling into fists at his side.

Song Lan smiled coldly at him. “I’m going to negotiate a deal on Weiying’s behalf, Lanzhan. This offer is going to last for twenty seconds, so I suggest you listen very closely: you are going to come clean to your immigration lawyer, making a statement that this marriage is a fake, or you will be deported and Weiying will go to prison. If you tell the truth, you’re off the hook. But you’re still going back to Gusu.”
