“Almost?” Lanzhan inquired, arching his brow.

Weiying shrugged, putting his eyes back on the road. “Well, it is tradition in our family for us to get married in my parents’ barn. It’s been in the family for about five generations. My parents got married there, and so did Jiang Cheng and Huaisung Granny and his husband…”

“Oh,” Lanzhan said dully. “Well, sorry I messed up that tradition.”

Weiying chuckled before He reached over and gave his hand a quick, affectionate squeeze. “Don’t worry about it. And—and neither of you better ever tell my family I said this or I’ll kill you both—Uncle Song Lan’s barn is a bit nicer anyway.”

They crested a hill and the main property came into view. There were a handful of out-buildings, and one large, rustic barn set off from the rest. The house itself was generous in size and settled snugly against the cliff that dropped down to the sea. A handful of cars were parked out in the gravel driveway, one of which he recognized as Jiang Cheng’s offensive Mustang.

Weiying parked behind his mother's SUV and killed the engine before He looked at him and Sizhui.

“Alright,” He breathed. “Let’s do this.”

The three of them got out of the car and got their luggage from the trunk. Weiying led the way up the broad steps of the wrap-around porch to the door. He didn’t knock or ring the doorbell, but opened the door and went right inside. Warmth and the smell of roasting meat washed over them in a way that was homey and comforting.

They had barely stepped foot inside the door before Granny descended upon them. Granny pulled Lanzhan in for a hug, giving him a kiss on his unscarred cheek before she drew back, patting that same cheek with one warm, wide palm.

“It’s so good to see you again, dear,” Granny said with a smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes. “I can’t wait to see you and my grandson get married.”

“I can’t wait to marry him,” Lanzhan found himself murmuring as he returned her smile.

“And you must be Sizhui!” Granny exclaimed, looking at his brother. She hugged him. “Oh, it’s so good to meet you! I’m Weiying’s grandmother, Granny.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you too,” Sizhui said as he returned the embrace.

Granny pulled back, still smiling. “Why don’t I show you three to your rooms? You can freshen up and then dinner will be ready. I’m sure you’re all starving after the flight down here.”

“Mm, it smells so good!” Sizhui enthused.

“Let’s get you to your rooms then,” Granny said. She looked at Sizhui. “You and your mother will be sharing a room. I hope that’s alright.”

“Yeah, no biggie,” Sizhui replied.

With that settled, Granny led them up the stairs. She showed Sizhui his room first, and then she took Lanzhan and Weiying to their room. It was bigger than Weiying’s childhood bedroom, with a queen-sized bed along one wall, and its own fireplace. A set of wooden slat doors led out onto a private veranda.
