My Name Is Thomas:

Start from the beginning

I sipped my water.

The greenie gulped down some of Gally's drink mix. He gagged and spat it out on the grass in front of him, "Oh my word! What is that?"

"I don't even know," Newt laughed. I laughed with him, "None of us do but no one has ever died drinking it."

"Newbie, this is my lovely wife Zoe," Newt nodded to me.

I reached over and shook the green bean's hand, "Hi. It's nice to meet you." I slid closer to Newt.

"It's Gally's recipe. Trade secret," I said and looked at the brown liquid in the jar.

"Yeah well he's still a jerk," The boy replied. "What's out there?" He was looking at the walls.

"Trust me," Newt answered. "The maze is a dangerous place."

The boy looked uneasy, "We're trapped here aren't we?"

My husband nodded, "For the moment." We both turned and looked at the group of gladers.

"But," Newt continued. "You see those guys?"

I pointed at Minho and his runners. Molly was currently sitting on his lap making out with him. I chuckled and nudged Newt.

"There by the fire. Those are the runners. That guy in the middle, with the red-haired girl, that's minho. Keeper of the runners."

I continued the story, "In the morning the doors open and the runner run the maze. They map and memorize the patterns."

"They're trying to find a way out," Newt added onto my explanation.

Thomas looked back at my husband, "How long have they been looking?"

"Three years," Newt said. "Two since we first figured out there was a way out. Hidden in that bloody mess somewhere is our gate out of this hellhole."

"And they haven't found anything?"

I swirled the water in my cup around and around.

"It's a lot easier said than done." Newt held up a finger, indicating the greenie was suppose to listen. "Hear that?"

The clunks and grinds in the distance stated that the walls were mixing once more.

"It's that maze. Changing. Changes every night."

"How is that even possible?" Greenie questioned.

"You can ask the shanks who put us in here if you ever meet 'em," I replied and tossed my braid over my shoulder.

"Listen," Newt continued. "The truth is the runners are the only ones who really know what is out there. They're the strongest and the fastest out of all of us. Good thing too because if they don't make it back before those doors close they are stuck out there for the night. And no one has ever survived a night in the maze."

The boy looked uneasy. As we all did when subjects like this were discussed. "What happens to them?"

"We call them grievers," I replied.

Newt stated, "No ones ever seen one and lived to tell about it. But they're out there."

"Okay enough depression," I said and stood.

"Right. You're supposed to be the guest of honor," Newt stood with me.

The boy said, "Oh no no."

"No come on," Newt helped him up. "Let me show you around."

Newt led the boy around the campfire to introduce him to the different jobs while I found Molly. She was sitting beside Minho. I sat beside her and watched what was happening. Gally was wrestling my brother.

I winced when Gally tossed Danny to the dust.

"Come on shank!"Gally said. "You seriously gonna give up now?"

Daniel got up and charged Gally again. This time he threw his opponent to the ground and knelt on him. Gally knocked my brother off. He lifted Danny by the collar of his sweater, threw him out of the circle, and right into newbie.

Gally brushed off his hands, "What do you say greenie? Wanna see what you're made of?"

The newbie looked around.

"Greenie! Greenie! Greenie!" The guys around me started to chant.

We all formed a circle around Gally and green bean. The other gladers all applauded.

"Rules are simple. I try to push you out of the circle. You try to last more than five seconds."

A ripple of laughter sounded around me. I gave Newt a "be ready" look across the circle in case Gally got too rough. He nodded in response. Gally charged the newbie and threw him back into a group of boys. The boys pushed greenie back into the circle. Newbie was tossed to the dirt with a thud. Molly and I exchanged glances. Why boys get pleasure out of trying to beat the living tar out of each other I'll never know.

"Come on greenie. We're not done yet," Gally taunted.

"Stop calling me greenie," The new glader said.

"Oh stop calling you that? What do you want to be called? Shank?" Gally paced around Thomas. "What do you think boys? Does he look like a shank?"

Greenie's face was reddening deeper by the second. He charged Gally head-on. Gally once again threw him into the sand. All the glader's groaned.

"He's not gonna win," Molly whispered.

"Give him time," I replied.

Gally said, "I think I've decided on shank." Gally was tackled by newbie but dragged the newbie across the ring. Greenie let Gally slip past him and land stomach-down in the dirt. Quick as lightning Gally kicked the new guys feet out from under him. The new glader fell. I winced when he shmucked his head on the ground. He went still for a second.

"Thomas," He mumbled. He scrambled to his feet, "Thomas! I remember my name! I'm Thomas!"

"Thomas!" Alby yelled as all the guys crowded him.

Molly cocked an eyebrow, 'Must have gotten it knocked back into him."

"Must have."
