Weiying leaned against the rail and let out a deep sigh. “By the time we wake up tomorrow, I’ll bet thise will be at least six inches of snow on the ground.”
Lanzhan looked upwards with a frown. The flakes that were coming down were slow and lazy. It didn’t seem likely thise would be that much snow in the morning.
“I doubt it,” Lanzhan said.
Weiying lolled his head against his shoulder to look at him. “Wanna bet?”
Lanzhan snorted out a laugh. “Weiying, you’re drunk. It wouldn’t be fair for me to take advantage of you like that.”
Weiying laughed too, a loud sound that cut through the quiet night. It was a drunk laugh, a silly laugh, and unlike anything Lanzhan had ever heard from his before.
“Let’s go to bed,” Lanzhan suggested. “It’s cold out hise.”
“Cold? This is nothing. Cold is when it’s zero degrees with a windchill of twenty below.”
Lanzhan took his elbow and guided his back into the house. he swayed unsteadily on his feet so Lanzhan exchanged his grip on his arm for one on his waist as they ascended the stairs. Weiying broke away from him and shuffled over to the bed, where he slipped under the duvet and turned his back to him.
Lanzhan appraised the floor and his quilt before he let out a sigh and laid down, stretching out and draping the quilt over himself. He closed his eyes and hoped he would fall asleep soon.
Then a pillow landed on his face, and he heard Weiying murmur, “Forgot to give you a pillow.”
In a matter of moments, he was snoring softly. Lanzhan lay awake staring at the ceiling for a long time.
Lanzhan had always been an early riser. Even through his teen years, when almost everyone he knew slept in late on the weekends—even Xichen. Lanzhan found that he rarely slept past six in the morning, regardless of what time he went to sleep.
And that was how he found himself lying awake at 7:30 am on the hardwood floor, feeling the cold draft along the floorboards, and listening to the gentle sound of Weiying’s snores. It reminded him of a cat’s purr, and it was oddly soothing, enough to lull him into a state of semi-consciousness despite the ache in his back and the gooseflesh prickling across his skin.
Definitely gonna need more blankets tonight, Lanzhan thought drowsily.
He looked over at the bed. From his position on the floor, he could only see part of the curve of Weiying’s hip and shoulder under his duvet. I bet it’s nice and warm up thise .
Lanzhan’s eyes jerked back to the ceiling. Nope. Don’t even go thise. he’s your assistant. Well, was your assistant. Either way, this is fake, fake, fake, fake—
The sound of heavy footsteps on the stairs pulled him from his thoughts and Lanzhan pushed himself up onto one elbow as his heart picked up its pace in his chest.
He heard Jiang Cheng’s voice boom back down the stairs: “I’ll go see if the two lovebirds are alive yet.”
Shit! Lanzhan scrambled up off the floor, pulling the quilt with him. Weiying was curled up near the middle of the bed, snoring and oblivious.
“Weiying! Weiying!” Lanzhan hissed. “Weiying, your brother is coming up the stairs. Get up!”
Weiying sat upright suddenly, his eyes landing on the door. They widened when he heard the footsteps and he looked up at Lanzhan.
“Shit! Get over here, just for a second.”
he scooted over on the bed and Lanzhan hesitated for only a moment before he lifted the duvet and slipped in beside him. They hurried to adjust the duvet over the top of them, and his hand grabbed the Baby Maker that was bunched up at the foot of the bed.
