Lanzhan tried to keep his expression neutral as he turned to look at Weiying. When did that become a thing? Lanzhan knew his parents lived in Jiang Lan. And what happened to making decisions about this as partners? That didn’t sound very partner-like to Lanzhan.
“Where is this surprise going to take place?” Wen Qing inquired.
“Yunmeng Island,” Weiying answered. “So it’s in the country and won’t be an issue for Lanzhan.” He reached over and squeezed his hand.
Wen Qing eyed Lanzhan. “And when is that happening?”
“Next weekend,” Weiying answered quickly.
“You’re going to Yunmeng Island next weekend?”
“Yep,” Lanzhan said. “Next weekend.”
“We’ll be there for the weekend,” Weiying reiterated.
“Alright then.” Wen Qing folded her hands in front of you. “I’ll see you both Here at eleven am on Monday morning for your scheduled interviews, and your answers better match up on every account.”
Lanzhan stood up. “Thank you.”
He and Weiying left her office. Lanzhan didn’t say anything until they were back in his car. Then he turned to Weiying.
“By the way, thank you so much for telling me about meeting your parents,” he hissed, his tone dripping with sarcasm.
Weiying narrowed His eyes at him. “Hey, my bad! This last week has been crazy. This trip has been scheduled for like, two months. If you paid attention to your own schedule at all, you’d see that I requested Monday off to catch up on sleep.”
Lanzhan rolled his eyes as he turned the engine over. “You want this to be a partnership? That means you gotta tell me about shit.”
“I’m sorry, okay?” Weiying said exasperatedly. “I didn’t even mean to tell you in there, but when He brought up meeting our parents I sort of panicked—”
“Panicked?” Lanzhan snorted out a laugh. “Weiying, you were so chill in those.”
“No, I really wasn’t.” Weiying shook His head. “To be honest, the whole time I kind of felt like I was gonna throw up.”
Lanzhan glanced over at His. “Well, outwardly, you never would’ve known. You keep it together under pressure.”
“Was that a compliment?”
Lanzhan shrugged. “I guess so.” Then he looked over at His. “I just...I want to say thank you. For doing this. I can’t...even put into words how much this means to me. You didn’t have to—”
Weiying smiled at him. “You’re welcome. But you might not want to thank me after meeting my family, so you might want to hold off on that.”
Lanzhan chuckled. “Alright.”

Weiying checked Himself in the mirror one last time before He forced Himself to leave the bathroom and go back out to the table where Lanzhan and Lan Qiren were waiting for Him. They were still waiting for Xichen and His fiancée, Meng Yao, to arrive, and with each passing second, Weiying was feeling more and more nervous.
It was stupid. Xichen and Meng Yao knew this whole thing was a farce, so He shouldn’t have felt this way. Lan Qiren was His boss, and while he didn’t know the truth, He already knew him and could more easily pretend to be just as madly in love with his nephew as he expected Him to be.
But Lanzhan had also told Weiying about Xichen. He knew that the young Alpha was a ruthless, cunning businessman who had been their father's right hand man for years. And while Weiying still didn’t know much about their father, He knew enough to know he was bad news. Lanzhan spoke of Xichen with a mixture of love and hate, and Weiying was apprehensive about meeting him.
