“Yes, please, have a seat.” Wen Qing sat down.
Weiying and Lanzhan sat in the chairs opposite of the desk. Wen Qing turned Her eyes down to the file in front of Her.
“Thank you for seeing us on such short notice,” Lanzhan said.
Wen Qing glanced up at him with a smile. “Of course.” her eyes flickered to the file again before she looked at Weiying. “Now, I just have one question for you.”
Weiying resisted the urge to swallow. “Yes?”
“Are you both committing fraud to avoid his deportation so he can keep his job as marketing manager at Cloud Recesses and so that Weiying could be promoted to marketing analyst?”
“Of course not,” Weiying said more calmly than He felt. “That’s ridiculous.”
“Where did you hear that?” Lanzhan demanded to know.
Wen Qing looked at the file again. “We had a phone tip Friday afternoon from a man named Su She—”
“Su She is just a disgruntled employee,” Lanzhan said with a wave of his hand. “He was hoping to get Weiying’s promotion, and now he’s convinced that the promotion is a show of favoritism from my uncle and myself. But the truth is my uncle was considering His for the position for a few months now, and that was before he knew about our relationship.”
“Hmph,” Wen Qing said.
Lanzhan gave her an apologetic smile. “I apologize for that. We know you’re extremely busy, so if you just give us our next step, we’d be happy to get out of your hair.”
“Let me explain to you the process that is about to unfold,” Wen Qing said. “Step one, will be a scheduled interview. I’ll put you each in separate rooms, and I’ll ask you every little question that a real couple would know about each other.”
Weiying and Lanzhan shared a brief look. At least they had that covered.
Wen Qing went on. “Step two, I will dig deeper. I talk to your neighbors, I interview your coworkers. If your answers don’t match up at any point, you will be deported indefinitely.” She looked at Weiying. “And you, Omega, will have committed a felony that is punishable by a $250,000 fine and up to five years in prison. Do you understand this?”
Lanzhan watched Weiying carefully from the corner of his eye. He smiled warmly at Wen Qing.
“Wen Qing,” Weiying began. “The truth is that Lanzhan and I are just two people who weren’t meant to fall in love, but did. We couldn’t tell anyone, because of my big promotion coming up.”
“We both felt that it would be deeply inappropriate for his to be promoted before we went public,” Lanzhan added.
“I see.” Wen Qing appraised them. “Have either of you told your parents about your secret love?”
“I’m estranged from my fatHis,” Lanzhan stated bluntly. “And we’ll be telling my mother this week.”
The lawyer was looking at the file again. “Your mother lives in Gusu with His husband, and their Omega Son Lan Sizhui, correct?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
“Is she coming to visit?”
“Ah, no. I was going to tell Her over Skype.”
“Mm-hm.”
“And after that we’ll be visiting my parents to tell them,” Weiying piped up chipperly. “It’s my granny’s birthday, and the whole family will be there. We thought it would be a nice surprise.”
