The Glader: Newt x OC

"No hard feelings." Newt and I shook hands through the bars.

            I scurried away as fast as my feet would carry me without making it look like I was running. I went to the med-hut and folded as many bandages as I could. I swept the place with the willow broom. After that I remade the three beds, straightened the shelves, and washed any tools Jeff or Clint had used.

"Hey doc," A voice sounded from the other room. 

Timmy, one of the sloppers, walked in.

"Hey tim," I smiled and rolled up my sleeves. Clint walked in behind him, "Burn."

Tim held up his hand, "Grabbed the wrong end of the poker."

I saw a red stripe stretching from his little finger to his wrist. "Ouch."

He nodded.

Clint and Jeff tended Tim while I got another pail of water from the stream. I carried the bucket back, spilling it all over me. I set it down on the bench inside the door of the med-hut and sat beside it. My hands shook.

"Oh no," I breathed. "No no no." I clenched my fists in an effort to stop my vibrating. My throat tightened. I could hear my heart beating in my ears. I took a deep breath and exhaled. Before the tension lessened I had repeated that a few times. I scooped up some of the water from the pail and drank it from my hands. I rubbed my wet hands over my face, "Okay, that was weird."

Jeff walked in, "Yo she-bean. You okay? Alby ain't gon' like it if he finds you sitting around."

"Sorry," I stood. "I got the water."

"Great, fill up the washtub. I need some rags scrubbed out."

"Got it."

           By the time Alby ended the workday I was exhausted. The only thing that kept me from collapsing was the excitement at finally having a family. Even though it was just Daniel it was more than I had yesterday. I got my meal from Frypan, salad and some cooked chicken, then sat down across from my brother.

Daniel shoved the stool out for me with his foot, "How's my favorite sister?"

"I'm your only sister," I laughed and set my plate down.

"So that automatically makes you my favorite and the earth's greatest."

I smiled and dug into my food, "So how was your day?"

"Meh, Gally got on my tail a few times. Wish I could give him a good slam in the face without getting put in the slammer."

I looked over at Gally who was looking at me. I blushed and turned back to Daniel, "Well, I don't think he is too bad."

"No, Don't go getting all soft around Gally. That shank is a first-class moron."

I shrugged, "He's been nothing but nice to me."

"That's because he's sweet on ya."

"Me?"

Daniel leaned closer, "Plenty of the guys here are." He looked around. "That's why I don't let you go off on your own too much. These boys are nice but some of them are unpredictable."

I caught his meaning. Daniel stole a piece of chicken off my plate. I smacked his hands, "Paws off!"

"Fine fine okay," He laughed. "So, I wonder what our last name was."

"I don't know," I shrugged. "I've been thinking about mom and dad."

"Mom and Dad?" Ben asked.

"Yea. You said you saw them?"

Daniel stared off towards the walls. His brown eyes clouded over as he went quiet. "Yes."

"What are they like?" I asked.

"Dad had dark blonde hair, like Gally's kinda. Mom had brown hair like us. Dad, he looked strong. Tough, like a fighter. Mom was small, and innocent looking. She wore a dress, orange with white flowers, she had a white flower tucked in her hair. Dad was holding her hand. We were in that field."

"Anything else?" I pressed, trying to envision what my brother saw.

"That's it. Gee Zoe, I really wish I remembered more. Stupid creators stole it all."

"It's okay," I put a piece of chicken in his bowl. I had lost my appetite.

"So did you talk to Newt?" He whispered.

"Yea, I did. He's got no hard feelings."

"That's good. Did he say anything else?" Daniel cocked an eyebrow.

What was he expecting me to say? That newt confessed he cared about me in a more than friends way? "He didn't say much more," I lied.

"Oh, okay then."

So Zoe has a brother? And I wonder if Newt will get his act together before it's too late...?
