I shrugged and looked up at the darkening sky, "I'm not one for chaotic parties."
"That wasn't even chaotic," Newt laughed with his thick accent.
"Well it was more than I'm used to." I just wanted him to leave me alone while I processed. "Okay then," Newt leaned against the trunk of the tree. "Will you at least think about coming back?"
I pulled my knees up to my chest.
"You know," Newt said as he began to climb up. "This place isn't too bad. If you give it a chance."
"I want to go home," I whispered. "But I don't even know where that is."
"I know how you feel. We all do. But there's nothing you or anyone else can do about it."
Tears of exhaustion and anxiety filled my eyes. I brushed them away.
Newt frowned, "Listen hey. I'm here if you need anything."
"Thanks," I replied with my voice breaking. "I just want to be left alone."
He shrugged and carefully climbed back down. I noticed he limped slightly. Had he hurt himself trying to help me? A feeling of guilt overtook me.
I waited until he was out of sight before I climbed down myself. The bonfire was still on when I rejoined.
Daniel ran over to me, "You're alright! We were worried about you."
A tall, Asian boy walked over, "You scared the klunk out of us green bean. Dan told me you were asking about the maze and we thought maybe you'd."
As if on cue the doors began to rumble. I watched with wide eyes as the slowly closed. The grinding stone echoed across the glade.
"Wait maze?" I asked. "That's a maze?"
"Nevermind. I'm Minho. Has Daniel introduced you to our jobs yet?"
I shook my head. I was still wondering about the maze. Maybe there was a way out.
Daniel pointed to a tall, lanky, dark-haired boy and his friends, "That's winston. He's the slicers keeper."
I nodded.
"And over there, those are the builders. They aren't the sharpest tools in the shed but they know how to build a good roof," Minho added. "Gally is their keeper poor guys."
I rolled my eyes at his pun.
"We have two med jacks. Clint and Jeff. You met them earlier. Frypan and Brodie man the kitchen. Over there we have the sloppers. They keep this place organized. Zart's the keeper of the trackhoes," Ben explained.
"The whats?"
"The gardeners. Flower boys," He laughed. "And last and most important. The Runners. Minho's our keeper. The four of us answer to him."
"Runners."
"Yeah, we run the maze. Everyday when the gates open four of us run into it and make maps. We've been doing it for almost two years and so far our searching has been unsuccessful," Minho added.
"What are you looking for?" I asked, eyeing the walls.
"A way out of here."
So there was a way out. "So almost two years and nothing?"
Daniel shushed me. In the distance a low rumble could be heard.
"Hear that? The maze changes."
"It changes? How?"
"Well you can ask the idiots who put us in this place if you ever meet 'em," He shrugged.
The three of us watched as another glader was wrestled to the ground by Gally.
I turned around just as Gally threw him out of the circle.
"Hey she-greenie," Gally called. "You in?"
I looked at the group of boys.
Newt broke through the group, "No Gally."
Gally looked at newt, "Shut up. You don't own her."
Newt had his fists clenched at his sides.
"Greenie!" The boys began to chant.
Oh lanta. I was going to die. Gally towered a good couple inches taller and was probably a way better wrestler. There was no way I was coming out of this alive. I removed my sweatshirt leaving me in a black t-shirt, gaining a few glances from some of the boys. I cracked my knuckles in hopes of making myself look a little intimidating.
"You play fair Gally," Alby warned.
Gally scoffed, "Oh come on, the wind could knock her over."
Newt looked angry. He kept looking at me and then back at Gally. I exhaled and stepped into the circle.
"Alright let's get this over with," I said. Gally nodded and charged at me. I stepped to the side and stuck my foot out. He tripped and slammed into the dirt.
The boys all looked at me with shock. I quickly rushed to jump on Gally and get him around the neck. I locked his neck with my arm and knelt on the back of his knees. I stuck my fingers in the upper part of his spine and pressed hard. Gally fought to throw me off but I only tightened my grip. He tried to get his arm back to knock me off but the nerves I was pressing caused him to go limp. I claimed my victory for a few more seconds before I got off him and dusted off my hands. The boys were silent as they stared at me.
"How did you do that?" Jeff asked in awe. "Nobody beats him!"
"That was cheating!" Gally exclaimed as he coughed.
"Actually," Minho said. "That was totally fair."
I put my hands on my hips, "See. The wind can't blow me over."
"I want a rematch!" My opponent said as he dragged himself up out of the dust.
"Okay," I said. "Come at me. Let's do this."
Gally huffed angrily.
"I'll wait," I said with a sweet smile.
Gally charged at me once again. This time I ran at him and slammed into him. The air was pulled from my chest but that didn't slow me down. He grabbed my shoulder and tried to throw me but I quickly knocked his ear as he tried to throw me down. He skidded backwards. I kicked his knees out. Gally fell, taking me with him. I grabbed his free arm and bent it behind his back.
"I win," I said in his ear smugly. He fought my hold and before long tossed me to the dirt. He leaned over me, pinning my arms down.
"Oh really?" He sneered.
"Congratulations," I smirked. "You just surrendered." I kneed him in the side and used my elbow to knock him off balance. I quickly squirmed out of his hold and jumped on him. This time I knelt on his back and held his arms.
"Give up?"
"Yes, yes. Fine!" He yelled while I pressed his head into the dirt.
I stood up and bowed to the group around me. Newt and Minho exchanged a look with lowered jaws.
Ben clapped my shoulder, "Way to go! You rule!" He and Winston boosted me up on their shoulders. I laughed as all the boys crowded me with questions of how I won. I made them put me down.
"Gally," I said as he turned away from me. I held out my hand. Gally shook it.
"Good game."
He smiled, "You done good shank. I am impressed."
"I hope I didn't hurt you," I said.
"Nah, just my pride."
