Riley's POV

"Good morning my beautiful daughter!" The blinds in my room were ripped open and the sunlight instantly found its way into my eyes. "It may be the first day of school for you but it is also my first day of work! And we have such big days ahead of us!!"

"Mom, just five more minutes." I whined pulling the comforter over my eyes.

"You have an hour until school starts but thirty minutes until I leave to drop you off!" She sang walking out of my room as she hummed softly throughout our small house.

We had moved to Plymouth, Minnesota because my mom had been offered a job that paid her twice as much as her old job. We moved from Chicago, Illinois and I was forced to leave behind all of my lifetime friends. I let out a loud groan and rolled out of the bed staring at myself in the full mirror that was hanging on the wall. That was the only thing on my wall actually because I hadn't had time to unpack much seeing as we got here about one week ago, and I was really lazy. I opened the door to my closet and stared at the outfit I had picked out last night because I knew I would be tired this morning. I quickly changed into a pair of black high-waisted shorts and then pulled a white, crop top that had a pair of bright red lips on it over my head. I walked out of my room and down the hall into the bathroom that was mine, since I was an only child and my mom had her own bathroom. I quickly brushed my hair closing my eyes hoping that I would fall asleep and everything would be a dream. I would be back in Illinois in our small apartment with my best friend, Max, next door with her family and not in this preppy neighborhood with the white fences, small dogs, and super smiley stay-at-home moms. I laughed aloud and opened my eyes staring at myself in the mirror narrowing my green eyes at my reflection.

"You are going to have a great first day." I pointed at my reflection just staring at it for about a minute. "I need to find some friends." I muttered looking away as I quickly tied my dark, brown hair up into a ponytail and grabbed my makeup out from under the sink. I rubbed my nose and eyes before I started to apply my foundation. I finished with my makeup making an effort to make sure my eyeliner looked somewhat perfect, because on most days I looked like a drowned cat. I gave my reflection a smile and then grabbed my toothbrush from above the sink and brushed my teeth mentally trying to prepare myself for my first day of school.

What will everybody think of me? I spit into the sink and then rinsed my mouth out before I wiped my mouth with a hand towel. I stared at myself in the mirror again and then applied some pink tinted chapstick forcing a smile onto my face. I walked out of the bathroom taking my ponytail out along the way. I ran my fingers through my naturally straight hair and walked down the steps my footsteps echoing throughout the silent house. I walked into the kitchen staring at the two waffles my mom had set out for me. I grabbed one eating it plain because I was too lazy to grab syrup or peanut butter to put on them. I finished the first one and then quickly ate the second one just sitting on a bar stool in the middle of the kitchen. I finished and crumbled up the paper plate before I threw it into a small, plastic bag since our garbage can was in a box somewhere. I walked back up the steps and brushed my teeth again wanting my mouth to be clean because I will be smiling a lot. I reapplied my chapstick and then walked into my room putting on my red converse a smile taking over my face.

"Riley, are you ready?" Mom asked as she shook her keys, a nervous habit of hers. I walked out of my room standing at the top of my steps smiling down at her. She had left her short, light, brown hair in its natural waves making me smile even wider because this is my favorite way that she does her hair. She raised one of her eyebrows at me a small smile replacing her worried expression. "What are you up to now?"

"Nothing, mom, nothing at all." I smiled running down the steps trying to avoid her. She reached out and grabbed me wrapping her arms around me in a hug. I laughed hugging her back as she kissed my head.
