What is desire?

What does it mean to want?

What is the burning craving in my very soul that compels me to action without forethought or remorse?

The answer is complicated.

But it is also very, very simple.

It is me.

You are your desires.

A collection of impulses and wants.

Humans are motivated by two things.

Needs.

And wants

But for me, they are one and the same.

To ignore a desire, to stifle an impulse is the same as starving myself.

That is what it means to truly want something.

With all you are and all you have, to crave it more than anything else.

To feel your skin burn and mind twist at the slightest denial.

To feel needles in your blood and poison in your heart when left wanting.

Humans are motivated by desire.

For some, it is simple things, like money, power, or fame.

But for others, it is complex, companionship, comfort, love!

To judge any of them as good or bad is trite.

What is the difference between a want and a need?

Why are they different at all?

If humans are motivated purely by these two things then what separates them?

Anyone would forgive the question, on the surface they seem extremely similar.

Especially to one who finds their wants to be as undeniable as breathing.

Say you make a meal.

It has calories and nutrients and will keep you sufficiently energized.

And so you eat it.

That is need.

Now let's flip it.

I make something to eat.

A meal consisting of flavorful fruits and savory meats, well-seasoned sides accompanied with a sweet dessert.

I do this because it is what I want to eat.

It is delicious.

That is desire.

Desire is freedom.

The beautiful black feather wings of an angel.

Desire is what makes us different.

And if desire is freedom?

Then perhaps you believe need is a prison?

That too would be a forgivable mistake.

It seems like that on the surface.

And you're not entirely mistaken either.

But the true prison is not need.
