Chapter 6: Green (1)

"Here you go, Gary. I'll give this to you if you like it so much," a man said to his grandson.

The man, Samuel Oak, handed over his pendant to the eager boy.

Gary Oak.

"Thanks a lot, Grandpa!" Gary exclaimed excitedly.

The orange haired boy looked up to his grandfather for as long as he could remember.

Children would think the reason was due him being the leading researcher of the Pokémon world.

The elderly would think that the boy simply loved his grandfather.

Neither were correct.

Gary Oak admired his grandfather after stumbling upon an old videotape.

Inside it, contained a documented Indigo Grand League.

The first ever.

And a young Samuel Oak was the victor.

The boy watched his grandfather's tournament performance religiously.

Each viewing only increased his admiration for the professor.

Then one day, during a summer break at age 5.

An essay titled: 'What do want to be in the future?' was assigned to him.

Gary Oak wasted no time to answer:

The greatest Pokémon Trainer in the world.

Just like his grandfather in the past.

During his vacation at the Alola region, the boy was accompanied by a girl his age, Blue Leaf.

He got along well with her as well as another boy who he thought was unfortunate enough to attend his grandfather's summer camp.

A trinity of outcasts amidst their peers.

A genius.

A foreigner.

And an orphan.

But amongst the trio, Gary enjoyed Blue's presence much more.

To him, she was a great friend who always cheered for him in his goal.

To her, he was a source of confidence and her admiration.

Gary understood what would happen if he continued to spend time with her.

He was always calculative even at a young age.

But he did not care and their time in Alola only brought them closer.

With her, he could become who he wanted to be:

A boy unshackled by the labels of 'Oak's Grandson'.

With her, he was just Gary Oak.

Returning home to Pallet Town, he made another discovery.

His first friend, his 'brother'.

Ash Ketchum was smiling more often.

His spirit more robust than ever.

Gary could not believe it.

But was happy nonetheless.

"Ah, Ash? He met a special someone. It got this old man tearing up, I tell ya," Oak recounted with happy tears in his eyes.

The professor showed his grandson and Blue various pictures of his friend doing activities with a honey-blonde girl.

Blue was over the moon seeing the pictures as she proved to be quite the romance nut.

Gary could only silently thank the girl for gifting Ash the happiest time of his life since Delia's passing.

Since then, Gary never made fun of Ash nor teased him about it.

Blue, on the other hand, was Ash's worst nightmare.

And soon, Ash inadvertently became Gary's.

The sight of a wild Pikachu within the arms of his injured rival.

He could not understand.

The Pikachu had been abused by humans and tortured by his kind.

And yet, there it was.

Happily cradled in Ash's arms

Even allowing Blue to touch it.

Gary could only conclude what he was seeing with a thought.

'Red has something even I don't…'

It irritated him.

It gnawed on his mind.

His rival having an ability he did not.

He could not understand it.

Unknown and foreign to him.

And that frightened the boy.

"Oh yeah, Green. I don't think I've mentioned this to you but remember our essay in the past? About what we wanted to be in the future?" Ash asked Gary with a determined smile.

Gary nodded, not knowing where he was going with this.

"Well, I'm gonna be a Pokémon Master! And Pikachu here is gonna be my ace!" Ash declared proudly.

'What? Just because you have something I don't…' Gary thought.

'Do you think you're better than me?'

"Told you not to copy me, Red." Gary said with a venomous tone.

"I'm not. This isn't just a challenge from me to you… It's also my promise to her" Ash said with his red eyes coloured with determination.

With that, he figured out the person who drew out his rival's potential:

The straw hat girl.

"You… You don't scare me, Red." Gary said with a dark smirk.

Shackled by blood.

However, Gary knew he was only convincing himself.

Fear of the unknown.

That he was not afraid of his friend.

The genius' equal.

His rival.

His enemy.
