Five minutes after Abeba was put on the stretcher, Tomoe Youko was born. Advanced surgical instruments cut through skin and muscle to free her from the comfort and confinement of her mother's womb. Brightness assailed her closed eyes.
Sounds of efficient movement and calm voices surrounded her. Suction cleared her nose and mouth, causing her to wail. One pair of gentle hands wiped away blood and fluid from her eyes, while another stuck sensors to her. She cried out something stabbed her foot. The pain quickly gone as a blood sample was taken.
Then she opened her eyes to her new world.
Tomoe saw, blurry and unfocused, all manner of technology dedicated to saving her life. None of it made to her new eyes or ears, but she wanted it to know everything.
