Katherine had just gotten back from talking to Jack.
"Hannah."
"Sir?"
"Once Katherine gets home bring her to my office. I need to have a little chat with her."
"yes, Sir. Katherine. Your father wants to see you."
About what? Did her father know about Jack? Or just how much she'd be hanging around the Newsies? Or was it that she supported them?
"Yes, father?"
"Sit."
Hannah stood behind Mr. Pulitzer's desk.
"Jack Kelly."
"What about him?"
"What do you know about him?"
"He's the leader of the Manhatten Newsies."
"Anything else?"
She wasn't about to betray Jack. She shook her head.
"Y'all have been hanging out."
"Yeah, so?"
"HE'S A CRIMINAL, KATHERINE! He BROKE OUT of JAIL!
"You mean, The Refuge, which is supposed to be a safe place for kids who have no one to take care of them or can't take care of themselves!"
"Have you been seeing Jack Kelly or not?"
"Yes."
"Friends or more?"
"It's complicated."
"How so?"
"I think he likes me, but we haven't discussed our relationship."
"If he asks you to be his girlfriend, you should say yes. You can find out everything about him that way and tell me the plans he's been plotting against me."
"Yes, father."
"You may go."
"You're going to betray Jack?"
"No, I'm just letting my father think that so he doesn't get suspicious."
"What was that about?" Bill asked.
"He's trying to get me to betray Jack. I'm not but I let him think what he wants to."
She had told The Dealnecy's, Bill, and Darcy that she kinda liked Jack. They were all supportive, didn't want me to get hurt, and were willing to protect me.
"If he breaks your heart, I break him!"
"Thanks, Morris."
So far he hadn't.
"How's he doing?" Darcy asked.
"Upset after Crutchie, but Davey and I managed to convince him to not give up."
"I'm protecting Crutchie while he's at The Refuge," Morris commented.
"Thank you. I know Jack will appreciate that. I'll let him know."
Morris just nodded.
"I wish we could do more to help the Newsies without getting hurt ourselves," Oscar added.
"Yeah."
