Maya's POV
"Aaaand done," I said happily as I signed the last paper for our foster application.
"Should we go give the bambines the news?" Carina asked. I nodded. "Let's go."
I locked my hand in hers, swinging them back and forth.
"When love takes you in and everything changes," I started singing.
"A miracle starts with the beat of a heart," Carina sang, taking turns with me.
"When love takes you home and says you belong he-" I stopped singing as we entered Jess's room, finding it empty.
"That's weird," I commented. "Maybe she woke up and went to see Iris?"
"Sì, let's go look," Carina replied.
We briskly walked back to the burn unit, desperately hoping she was there. As soon as Iris's door was in sight, I started sprinting.
I threw open the door. "Jess?" I yelled. "Jess are you in here?" I started looking around the room furiously.
"What's going on?" Iris asked sleepily.
"Ciao, bambine," Carina said hastily. "Is your sister in here?"
"She's not with you?" Iris asked, starting to panic.
"Ok Maya, calm down," Carina said. "Maybe she just wandered off?"
"No, Carina, you don't understand. Jess doesn't just wander, especially without telling someone," I replied.
"Page Chief Bailey! Do something! What is it, a code pink?"
"Ok, ok bellina, I'll call a code pink," Carina said. She took out her phone and typed something.
After a few seconds, we heard people in the hall start running. Chief Bailey appeared in the doorway almost immediately.
"Ok stay calm," she said. "We're going to find her, I promise you. DeLuca, come with me, we're going to check the cameras."
"Coming, Bailey," Carina replied. She turned back to me.
"Bellina, stay here and stay calm, we'll find her." I nodded before she turned and left the room.
I pulled out my phone and texted the station's group chat.
S19 Team A
Ok guys, we have an emergency.
Jess is missing. I need you to do me
a favor. Text Chief Ross and see if
she is able to pull some strings to
check the police database to see if
Peter is still in custody.

Andy: Maya I just texted
Chief Ross and she
fortunately was able to
access the database herself.
According to their records,
Peter was released 3 hours
ago.
Vic: ok everyone stay calm.
We'll find him and Jess. I
guarantee that.
"Oh my god, Carina," I yelled. Carina came rushing in.
"What is it Maya?" she asked, slightly out of breath.
