I quickly grabbed my phone out of my pocket and pressed my best friend's number. Every ring made me more and more annoyed
"Come on Shelby pick up the phone!" I thought out loud, finally she picked up
"Bry? What do you want it's 6:30 in the morning" She asked sounding sleepy
"I need help" I replied quickly
"What's wrong?" She asked sounding concerned
"Ok I'm going to say this quick... I have a merman in my bath" I replied quickly, there was a bit of a silence before she said something
"Is this a joke?" she asked sounding unamused
"I'm serious, he's bleeding a lot and I'm scared he might die if he doesn't get medical attention, come on you work with sea life!" I protested
"Alright, alright I'll grab my gear and I'll be there in about 10 minutes alright?" She replied with a yawn
"Thanks Selb I owe you" I smiled hanging up the phone, as I put my phone down I heard slight water movements... he must be waking up. I slowly got off my bed and made small movements towards the bathroom, I poked my head in the door way and saw his eyes where shifting under his eyelids. His eyes opened lazily and he looked around the room... nothing too bad yet. But then his eyes widened when he realized where he was and he began flailing around like a fish out of water since he is one
"Whoa! Whoa! Take it easy!" I said coming into the room holding my hands out, he froze and looked at me with frightened eyes
"Calm down fish boy I'm not gonna hurt you" I said calmly trying as hard as I could not to scare him. He continued staring at me like I was going to stab him if he moved
"Good, ok can you understand me?" I asked, he nodded slightly still shaking
"Can you talk?" I asked
"Y-Yes..." he replied quietly
"What's your name?" I asked getting a little closer
"W-Why would you ne-need to know th-that?" He replied looking me up and down like how a frightened animal would look at a predator
"Just wondering" I replied with a small shrug
"C-Chai..." he replied
"Chai? As in chai tea?" I asked
"Wh-What?" he asked confused
"Right you're from the sea you wouldn't know what chai tea is" I thought out loud, I do that a lot
"Anyway, I saw you washed up on the beach and you were bleeding pretty badly so I thought I should bring you back here since you could have bled out and died if I had left you" I explained as he just continued staring at me
"You don't have to look at me as if I'm gonna eat you" I said and he looked away quickly, I heard a knock at the door
"Stay here" I said pointing to him
"Of course he'll stay there, he hasn't got legs you idiot" I thought to myself as I jogged over to the door. I opened it seeing Shelby on the other side, her hair in a really messy bun and her shirt was on backwards
"How long have you been able to dress yourself?" I asked with a laugh
"Shut up I was sleeping" She rolled her eyes walking in and I shut the door behind her. She quickly turned her shirt around and placed her kit on the table
"So what's up with this merman thing that you were talking about?" Shelby asked raising an eye brow
"Ok, I found a merman on the beach, he was bleeding, brought him back here and now he's in my bath?" I said kinda as a question, there was a banging and we both looked towards the bathroom
"I believe you now" She replied, we both rushed over to the bathroom and I saw Chai on the floor
"This is Chai, Chai this is Shelby" I said pointing to them both
"And you're out of the bath" Shelby replied as Chai looked up at her like a scared deer. After we lifted Chai back into the bath much to his displeasure he sat the with his tail against his chest shaking like a leaf in a down pour
"I can see the problem pretty clearly" Shelby said putting her kit down near the bath, she went to put her hands over one of the cuts but Chai flinched out of the way
"It's ok honey I'm not gonna hurt you" She said with a kind smile, Shelby is very good with people and animals and always know how to calm them down
"I just want to have a look over your cuts ok? It won't hurt" She said quietly
"Is it ok if I do that? Make the pain go away" She asked and Chai nodded nervously
"Good, this won't take long I promise" She smiled at him reaching for her kit
