"(Y/n)." A stranger stood in the distance with his back turned to you. When his deep voice reached your ears, your (E/c) eyes fluttered open in shock. You tried to move forward and reach out to the man giving you a sense of familiarity, but your feet were glued to the ground. Speaking, he didn't turn around to face you. "I... I'm happy to see you again, little cupcake."

Your eyes were wide in shock and your mouth stood agape. It had been so long since you had heard his calming voice. Years had passed since you two had chosen your own paths. Weakly, you tried to call out to him. "E—"

"Wake up, now," he shushed you softly. Your old friend faded away into the darkness, ignoring your pleas for him to stay. Soon, you too were swallowed by the greedy darkness, only to be blinded by striking light.

"Wake up, Mommy!" Someone jumped onto your chest playfully, causing you to awaken from your slumber with a startled jolt — thus banging your head against James'. The boy was the first to speak up again after groans of pain. "Ouch, that hurt..."

"James, why did you wake me up?" you asked with a little yawn escaping your lips. Looking out of the large windows flooding the room with fresh sunlight, you scratched your head in confusion. "It's still a little bit early, isn't it?"

"You were... whispering in your sleep, Mommy," James explained while cuddling into your chest again. At his words, you furrowed your eyebrows. "You were... mumbling a name! Over and over again. Did you have a nightmare?"

"...not really." Truth be told, you didn't remember most of what had happened; all you remembered was a mysterious man who gave you a sense of comfort and familiarity. "It wasn't a nightmare, but I appreciate you caring about me, James."

"Of course! I love you, Mommy." James yawned cutely. "I'm sad whenever you are sad."

"I'll try not to be sad then," you mused with slightly glistening eyes. You really had the best son in the world.

"Thank you, Mommy."

"How about we go back to sleep? We still have like... ten minutes to sleep..." Groggily, you threw your head back onto James' fluffy pillow. Little fits of laughter spewed from James' lips at your action. For a moment, serenity and peace returned to the bedroom. Enjoying the last rays of the sun while you still could, you dreaded the day and what was about to come. Every morning was a struggle, but less so when James was around.

Your peace was broken when James' attentive ears picked up the familiar voice of his father from below him. Before you could react, James darted out of his bed — climbing over you with the agility of a little monkey — and ran down the hallway; his destination was the kitchen.

You let out a loud gasp once your tired mind finished comprehending what had happened in the first place. Throwing the blanket aside carelessly, you jumped to your wobbly feet and ran after your rambunctious son as best as you could. You had planned on sneaking out with James later to avoid confrontation, but your plans were useless now.

"James—" you called out whilst zooming down the long hallway on the second floor, the staircase to the living room already in sight. That was until you bumped into someone: a woman you never thought you'd see again. "T-Tiffany—"

"Oh, so you still live in this house with Mattie, (Y/n)?" Tiffany mocked as she strode out of your bedroom. The way her poisonous green eyes looked down upon you made you want to strangle her, but you knew better than to give her what she wanted.

"Believe it or not, this is still my house, too," you hissed under your breath. For a moment — when you laid eyes upon the purple and blueish marks on her neck — all the hostility in your eyes was replaced by sheer vulnerability and sadness. Tiffany noticed, causing a little chortle to escape her lips. Quickly, you regained your composure and crossed your arms. "Why are you still here..."
