CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT:
HUMAN SHIELD

SHE STOOD THERE FOR A moment, everyone asleep except for John as he sat there, working out the plans for the morning. Aphrodite pursed her lips before sighing through her nose and making her way over to him. He glanced up at her, watching as she gave him a gentle smile before moving to stand behind him and placing arms on his shoulders as she watched him work. He hid his smile as he nodded to himself, looking back down at the plans for tomorrow.

When the next morning came around, Aphrodite couldn't help the nerves that were eating at her. Knowing that her daughter was out there, ready to protect the Strucker siblings and Caitlin as they stood on the roof. She knew her daughter was only there just in case, but she couldn't help but think of the last time her daughter was near Sentinel Services, it had been because of her ex-husband.

Aphrodite stood there with Marcos, Sonya, and Harry, and Sonya could tell her nerves were getting to her. The woman reached out, grabbing her sister's hand and giving it a small reassuring squeeze. And even though Aphrodite was upset with her for the moment, she couldn't help but squeeze back in response.

"Before this goes down, there's something we got to talk about." Marcos spoke up. "Listen, guys, if things go wrong―︎"

"We got it." Harry nodded. "We take off, regroup at the rendezvous―︎"

"No." Marcos cut him off. "Listen, if things go wrong, I'm not leaving, and I know Dove isn't either."

"Wait, what?" Sonya snapped. "We discussed this."

"I know what we discussed, but Sage was right." Marcos told her. "I have no right dragging you into a suicide mission. If things go sideways, you guys go."

"What about you two?" Harry questioned.

Marcos and Aphrodite exchanged looks with one another before Marcos answered. "I'm not leaving here without Lorna."

"And I'm not leaving him to get killed." Aphrodite added.

     "Win―︎" Sonya shook her head.

"We'll be okay." Aphrodite assured her sister, squeezing her hand once more and offering her a reassuring smile. "Just make sure my kid's okay." Sonya didn't say anything else, and instead reluctantly nodded.

They turned their heads at the sounds of vehicles, quickly ducking when they saw it was Sentinel Service. However, that's when they frowned upon seeing the bus still moving causing both Marcos and Aphrodite to ask in unison, "Why hasn't the bus stopped?"

"It's not stopping." Sonya shook her head. Moment's later that's when they could hear the sound of the tire exploding. Aphrodite cursed under her breath.
