Chapter 37
"Okay, everyone left the plane, are you ready to go off?" The flight attendant asked Meredith, Cristina and Alex
Meredith nodded and Cristina grabbed her bag as Alex scooped Meredith up and walked out of the plane, careful to not bump against the seats
"We arranged you a wheelchair until you get yours back" The male flight attendant said at the exit of the plane
Alex carefully placed Meredith in the chair and she immediately fixed the position of her legs and pushed herself but Alex saw she was struggling.
This wheelchair was way heavier and not as easy to maneuver with as her own so Alex grabbed the handles and pushed her to the area where they had to wait for their suitcases and Meredith's wheelchair.
"Maybe we can go out tonight for dinner?" Cristina suggested to lighten the mood
"I'm really craving a good steak" Alex said
"Sounds good to me! But no McDonalds!" Meredith laughed
"Damn.. why do all these suitcases look the same" Alex said as they arrived at the baggage area
"Let's first check if Mer's chair already arrived"
"Yes please, get me out of this horrible thing. I need my wheels back" She giggled
The three of them made their way to the information desk.
"Hi, we just came off the plane from Seattle and my chair was in the cargo. I wanted to check if it's already here" Meredith said
"Let me check for you. Do you have the ticket?" The red haired woman asked
"Yes" Meredith said and handed her the ticket
The woman behind the desk walked away and returned a couple of minutes later "Should be here any minute" She smiled
"Mer, I'm gonna take a look if our suitcases are here already" Alex said
"We'll wait here" Cristina said
After a couple of minutes the same woman walked towards Meredith while pushing Meredith's wheelchair. "Here it is" The woman said
"Thank you!" Meredith said
"Need a hand?" The woman asked politely
"No, I'll be fine. Just give me a minute, please." Meredith said and manouverd herself next to it and carefully transferred by her own as she gave the woman a nod and she took the other chair with her
"Thank you very much" Meredith said again before she and Cristina made their way to Alex.
"Here you are! I already got Mer's bag and mine." Alex said
"Hope it will be here soon because I need a shower" Cristina said
"I'm happy that Shep arranged us an SUV" Alex laughed as he took Cristina's suitcase off the baggage carousel
"Let's go" Meredith said and the three of them made their way out of the airport
...
"At least the car is big enough" Meredith said as Cristina opened her door and helped her into her wheelchair
"Can you two go check in? I'll bring the suitcases" Alex said and Meredith and Cristina went in.
During check in they double checked that everything was arranged before making their way upstairs.
"I'll go settle myself down and then I'll come to your room" Alex said and entered his hotel room.
Cristina opened their look and gasped when she saw the large room "McDreamy really did a good job" Cristina said as she looked around, followed by Meredith.
"I'll call him in a minute to thank him" Meredith smiled "Cristina.. uh.. will you? uh.."
"Help you with your catheter?" Cristina asked, trying to fill in what Meredith wanted to ask
Meredith nodded and Cristina grabbed the tools she needed to put out the catheter.
"It's been a while since I've done this" Cristina smiled in a try to lighten the mood
Meredith smiled back and when she was done she changed to some regular jeans and a blouse, only needing some help with her pants, socks and shoes
"That man is taking a long time. You okay if I take a shower in the meantime?" Cristina asked
"Yep! I'll call Derek first" Meredith said as she transferred herself into the huge comfortable bed
"Hi, Mer!" Derek's voice was heard through the telephone
"Hi! Oh, Derek! The room is really great, thanks again!" She said
"No problem, Mer. How was the car ride?" Derek asked
"No troubles at all. Everything went fine. I changed clothes after Cristina took out the catheter. She's showering and we'll study a bit more before we go for dinner" Meredith said
"Great, Mer. Don't forget your meds but uh.. I have a little surprise"
Meredith frowned and heard Derek saying "Hi, listen who's on the phone"
"Da?" Zola's voice was heard through the phone
"Zozo! It's mommy"
"Ma! Ya!"
"Mommy misses you already, baby"
"Ma miss!"
"I love you so much, baby girl"
"Luv" Zola repeated
"Mer? We're so proud of you" Derek said and Meredith could hear how relieved he was but someone knocked on the door
"Der, I love both of you but I have to go. I have to open the door for Alex"
"Bye Mer! Zo, say bye to mommy"
"Y ma!"
"Bye bye, love bug, bye Der" She said as she hung up and quickly transferred herself into her chair and wheeled to the door to let Alex in
"Hi, Cristina already running?" Alex asked
"No, she's showering" Meredith giggled and made her way back to the bed and took her pain meds.
...
"So, a steakhouse?" Alex asked
Jackson and April would join them for dinner. Alex drove to a small but fancy steakhouse and parked the car. All five of them got into the restaurant and were brought to a table and got the menus. After ordering they immediately started chatting about the exam and even started quizzing each other
"God, I'm so nervous" Jackson said
"I can't believe we're here" April said
"So many things happened in the years we spend together" Cristina said, reminding themselves of all the memories they shared over the last couple of years
"It's crazy! We're gonna be surgeons" Meredith said
Alex raised his glass of beer and said again "We're gonna be surgeons"
All the others raised their glasses, Mer drunk water, Cristina and April both drank wine and Jackson joined Alex with a glass of beer "We're surgeons" As they made a toast
