Chapter 35

Meredith and Derek sat down at the kitchen table. Today was the day that Meredith and the others would go for their board tests.

"You okay?" Derek asked as he noticed Meredith didn't eat much

"Just stressed." She smiled as she helped Zola spooning up her yogurt as they heard the front door opened

"Hey!" Christina yelled as she walked into the house

"Kitchen" Derek yelled back

"Hey, here you are!" Cristina said, placing her luggage next to the door and taking a seat. "Do you guys need to shower? I came a bit earlier so you could shower while I look after Zola"

"Thanks Cristina" Meredith said

"I think Mer could use some time for herself" Derek said, slightly worried about Meredith

"We'll go take a shower" Meredith said as she rolled to the stairs where she transferred to the chair lift and went upstairs, followed by Derek

"I labeled your chair yesterday. Your name is on the wheels and on the back, will that be okay?" Derek asked

Meredith nodded

"Shower chair?" Derek asked as Meredith was undressing her upper body

"Let's start without, please"

"Of course"

...

"Mer, can I put in the catheter now? We leave in 30 minutes" Derek asked

"I.. I guess" She said, staring at her hands who are resting in her lap

Derek proceeded to put in the catheter and put on Meredith's sweatpants, making sure the bag was invisible. Derek walked over to the bed to grab the wool socks that would keep her feet warm and put them on her feet before grabbing her sneakers while she put on a shirt and a sweater.

Once she was finished, Derek gently scooped her up and held her while he sat on the bed

"Call me if you need me, tell Alex or Cristina if you're in pain or if you can't do something, okay?"

"I will" Meredith sighed

"Zola and I love you!" Derek said as he kissed her forehead before he placed her in her wheelchair and they made their way downstairs.

Derer helped her from the stairlift to her own chair, the one she would bring with her to the test and both of them did a final checkup to make sure everything was alright.

"I'll give you your next dose of meds now and Cristina will give them once you've boarded, okay?" Derek checked in on Meredith

Meredith nodded and placed Zola in her lap before attacking the little girl with hugs and kisses.

...

"We're here" Derek said as he parked the car"

"I.. I don't know" Meredith whispered. Cristina didn't hear her and helped Zola out of the car

"Mer.. you'll be fine" He whispered as he grabbed her hand

"I need to do this" She said so Derek got out and grabbed her chair out of the trunk and wheeled it over to her side of the car before helping her in the chair.

"You okay?" He checked once again and she nodded.

In the meanwhile Cristina had placed Zola in Meredith's lap to distract her. They went to the departure hall to wait on the others while drinking a cup of coffee when Cristina's phone beeped.

"They will be here any second" Cristina informed Meredith who was fidgeting with her fingers when Derek kissed her neck and she accepted his touch immediately

"I'll take Zola for a second" Cristina said as she saw the others coming towards them so she decided to meet them halfway to give Meredith and Derek the time they needed.

Derek scooped up Meredith and took a seat on her chair with her in his arms

"I'll miss you and Zola" Meredith said as her hand went through Derek's hair

"We'll miss you. But call us whenever you can, okay?" He asked her with his McDreamy smile.

"I will" She smiled back before she saw the others were entering

"Mer, we need to check in" Cristina said

"Der, can I have my wheels back? Otherwise you'll have to come" She joked

"Of course" He smiled and placed her back in her chair before kissing her deeply and letting Zola say bye

"Bye Zozo, mommy loves you so so much" Meredith kissed the little girl's forehead

"Mer, Cristina, Alex. The meds are in her backpack that's on the back of her chair. Don't forget to take it with you when you board because they'll take her chair away but she needs her meds during the flight. And let her elevate her legs a few times for her blood circulation.." Derek said, hoovery

"Der.. I'm right here" Meredith laughed

"Just being a good husband" He replied before kissing her again

"Come on, let's go guys" Jackson said as he entered the group

"Bye guys! You'll do great, love you Mer!"

"Ma!" Zola yelled as she waved at Meredith as they all took off

"Thanks McDreamy again for upgrading our seats" Alex said. Apparently Derek arranged an upgrade for the group of friends. He wanted to make sure that Meredith would be comfortable and he knew she wouldn't want to be alone so he upgraded for Cristina and Alex too.

They made their way to the gate, Alex was pushing Mer while his carry on bag was on her lap.

"I.. I don't know" Meredith said once she reached the gate

"Alex go tell the flight attendant that we'll board but she needs to give us a couple of minutes" Cristina said as she returned her attention to Meredith when Alex went to the flight attendant to inform her.

"Look, Mer. We're the first people to board so no hurry, okay? We'll tell them that this is the first time you'll fly since your accident" Cristina said while rubbing Meredith's arm but she kept staring in her lap, her breathing labored.

"I.. How" Meredith stuttered

"Here" Cristina said as she passed her phone to Meredith "Call Derek"

After the phone call where Derek promised that Meredith would be fine she started to calm down again and after a few minutes she hung up the phone and gave it back to Cristina

"Mer.. Cristina and I will stay by you all the time, when one of us is to the toilet you'll have the other" Alex said as he grabbed her hand "Will you be okay to start boarding?" Alex asked Meredith and she nodded. The three of them followed the young and sweet flight attendant who asked Meredith to grab her belongings because Alex had to help her to her seat

"My bag" She pointed out

"I'll grab it" Cristina said as Alex carried Meredith to her seat and the three of them got themselves ready for the flight.
