As an 18-year-old in 1996 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Keshia Thomas participated in a counter-protest against a Ku Klux Klan rally in her city. Things got ugly fast and the crowd chased down a white man sporting a Nazi SS tattoo and wearing a confederate flag tee-shirt.

Someone shouted, "Kill the Nazi!" and people began kicking and beating the man.

That is when Keshia Thomas put herself in harm's way and protected this man with her body.

Would that man have done the same for Ms. Thomas? Probably not. That is why these pictures leave me speechless.

Later Ms. Thomas said, "You can't beat goodness into a person."

A few months after the incident a young man came up to her in a coffee shop and thanked her. When she asked why he was thanking her, he said, "That was my dad."

Keshia Thomas, you're my hero.
