Quick Note (IMPORTANT)
I'm from the UK and therefore have written using UK words such as chips (french fries), football (soccer), trainers (sneakers) crisps (chips) etc. Sorry if there is any confusion but don't think it should affect the story.
The first ten chapters are Isla's and Ash's POV but will change as the story progresses.
Also, if there are any mistakes feel free to let me know. I have edited as much as I could but there obviously will still be some mistakes.
If I offend anyone please let me know. It is never my intention to be offensive or harm anyone. I will be writing about a lot of heavy topics that I haven't experienced. I will be writing characters that are people of colour and the issues they unrightfully face. I am white. I have researched a lot and I'm still continuing to educate myself but I obviously can't understand or relate with racism as I have never experienced it, so I will get things wrong. Please call me out if I do step out of line and I will try my best to correct myself and educate myself further. I understand it is not my place as a white person to speak about other's traumas but I feel by writing about people of colour that do face racism in real life and then ignore it and not acknowledge their struggles then I'm part of the problem.
When writing about sensitive topics I'll try my best to be as sensitive and respectful as I can as it's not my trauma. I won't be going into much depth but more so dealing with casual racism and homophobic remarks and actions that are overlooked a lot in society. (I will also be putting a warning in the appropriate chapters. Although there is a warning for this whole book so read at your own discretion.)
This story is to include everyone of any race, sexuality, gender, social status and people with a disability. I want to make it as inclusive as possible and to do this I will be learning from people with those life experiences. I am in no way trying to talk over anyone.
I see too many stories where people who have a disability, POC and LGBTQ+ communities are overlooked or wrote as the supporting act. Of course there are a lot of books out there that do represent people other than straight, white, cis people but there's not nearly enough. by writing this I am aiming to have a cute and friendly story that also deals with real life issues people tend to overlook or romanticise. Speaking about romanticising, I am in no way promoting any serious topics I write about such as drug abuse nor am I trying to romanticise it. If it comes across as that then I apologies and accept that I haven't written as cautiously as I should have that would present my views accurately and will do better in the future.
This is my first book and I may not convey the messages correctly but I will try my hardest as I care deeply for all topics I write about. As I said, it really isn't my intention to offend anyone and I won't get everything right so please call me out.
There also won't be a lot of author's notes as I hate reading them and cringe writing them so if I do write them it most probably will be important.
