Le Castellet, France - June 2021
'Why do you make a pregnant lady hike on top of a cliff when it's zillion degrees warm outside?' Emily panted heavily when they were climbing up to their destination. Scar shot a million-dollar smile towards her friend. 'Because you're the most loyal best friend I could ever ask for, and you were complaining yesterday about how you didn't get enough exercise during your pregnancy.' Emily rolled her eyes affectionately towards Scar when Scar had used her argument against her.
'Whatever.' Emily murmured, and she focused on breathing, her hands automatically reaching her stomach that had gotten rounder. It was still manageable to cover with suitable clothing. Emily was on the edge of showing very soon. 'So, how long are you planning on telling Lewis you're gaining weight and covering the pregnancy by wearing uncharacteristically loose clothes?' Scar asked when they strolled the last steps to stop before a white church. A soft smile formed on her lips when she sank into the scenery that opened behind the white building towards the sparkling blue ocean, matching the sky above.
'Our fling is over.' Scar snapped her head to the side so quickly that she silently moaned of unexpected pain on her neck. 'What?' Her round Bambi eyes stared at Emily in disbelief. Emily shrugged. 'He was getting on my nerves with his constant demands.'
'Emily -'
'No.' Scar frowned at Emily's icy reply, ready to push her friend's buttons. Still, her features softened when she saw the tears in Emily's eyes. 'Sorry. These dam hormones.'
Emily tried to laugh it off, yet she failed miserably when her eyes glittered with heavy emotion. Scar scooped her under her shoulder, scenery long forgotten, and gave her a tight side squeeze, murmuring. 'Don't be silly, love. It's okay. What happened?' Heavy chuckles came past Emily's lips, and Scar waited patiently. 'I tried. I really tried to tell him. Every time I opened my mouth to utter the words 'I'm pregnant', the words got caught to my throat.' Emily cried in agony, shutting her eyes to remain some self-control before continuing. 'Last night, he mentioned how he wasn't planning on starting a family as long as he was driving in F1. Would you share your pregnancy news after that kind of comment?' A puppy eyes stared at Scar, who slowly shook her head. 'So I'm all alone with the child.'
Scar's heart went out for her friend, who looked scared and lost. 'Love, you're not alone. You have me, Britta and your other friends.' Scar tried to assure her friend as the reality had finally caught up with her. 'Sorry, I'm such a wreck.' Emily chuckled weakly, wiping the tears under her eyes with her fingers, yet Scar shook her head. 'Emily! No, you're not. You're brave, strong and truly amazing. You rock.' A grateful smile was flashed towards Scar when the words lingered in the air.
They fell into momentarily silence to sink in the endless Mediterranean ocean blue canvas opening below them. 'Why are we here?' Emily wondered and raised her eyebrows, making Scar shrug. 'We're all messed up and broken in our way at the moment.' Scar had needed an escape, and she had heard someone to mention a small church on top of a cliff, overseeing the sea. She wasn't ready to meet her demons just yet.
Scar saw in the corner of her eyes that Emily nodded to her words. 'What happened with Seb?' Scar was amused for a split second. Emily never amazed her to address the elephant in the room or call her mishaps.
'Code of conduct happened, as you know.' Scar replied sarcastically, rage building in her once her thoughts landed on the hearing in Monaco. Emily rolled her eyes. 'Cut the crap, Scar. Something else happened, or you felt something. Otherwise, you wouldn't so jumpy, running away, dragging me on top of the mountain to stare at a random church. You don't go to churches anyways voluntarily after your mum funeral, and it's not because of the view. What's up?' Emily gave a hardcore look to signal Scar not to mess with her. 'I can't.'
