London, UK - March 2021
The lingering looks were shot across the table when Scar and Emerson were opposite sides of the table, and they were in the same room first time in five months after Scar had walked in on him and Natalie. The passionate, loving and stars in their eyes look, and flirty sneak peeks were replaced with emptiness, indifference and a hint of anger and resentment, at least from Scar's side. The former couple's eyes were locked, weighing who would let go first. The pair that once was titled 'the power couple and royalty in swimming circles' were now the ashes of a fallen empire, a shadow that they once were. However, when they had stepped into the meeting room, the air had electrified, the feelings and chemistry very much still intact, drawing them towards each other like magnets. If they had chosen to push aside the hiccups, Scar felt they could have fixed anything. Nevertheless, the spark had died in their eyes, and the reality had sunken in.
Scar tore her gaze away from Emerson's, closing her eyes briefly when the vivid pictures rose in front of Scar. She wanted to forget. She was still hurt and hadn't come to terms with the events, which stang her self-esteem despite several sessions with Andrea after Scar's return to London. Luckily her missteps hadn't appeared on the press, which had been her saviour and silver-lining. The press had annihilated Emerson, making her the victim of the situation. She had ridden with that, pumping her self-confidence and fixing the fractions that their divorce had done to her, forcing her to suffocate her cheating to the back of her mind.
'Right then', her lawyer cleared his throat, fetching a pile of paper from his bag before laying them on the table, splitting the piles into half before passing one pile to Emerson's lawyer. He kept talking when he flipped the pages to the signing page. 'Since the filing of the divorce papers due to adultery -' Scar eyes shot an accusing look towards Emerson, who shrugged back. '- and intensive negotiations between myself and Aaron, we have divided the assets as they were before your marriage. Ms Smith was willing to give Mr James a 5,000-pound allowance -' She zoned out when the lawyers kept going on their list and settlement details.
Her emotions came more hyphened the more prolonged the meeting went, and she grew afraid that she would break down amid the meeting, which was the last thing she wanted. She had given a long and detailed pep talk to herself in the morning, promising to walk out head held high, showing her ex-husband that her reputation as an ice queen was, in fact, still intact. He didn't need to know the reality of constant sobbing sessions and too much wine evenings with Emily, followed by the earth shuttering hangovers at work. She was a wreck. '-Now that everything is agreed upon, it's time to sign.' Her lawyer stated unemotionally and pushed two copies of the papers forward, one copy for both parties.
Scar stared at the dotted line above her name and then the line that was still waiting for Emerson's signature. She raised the pen from the table, playing with the pen in-between her fingers before bringing the pen forward—the papers before her. The pen hovered above the dotted line, waiting for the ink to hit and make the previous month's work to come through. Sentimentality and bittersweetness launched through when the memories pushed through her mind. There was no way stopping them from coming through; the first meet in Beijing, coming friends, developing their friendship, taking the step to become an item, their firsts as a couple, the proposal, their wedding and their journey as a couple and athletes after the wedding, combining over the past decade of togetherness. He had been a significant part of her life for a third of her life. The time goldens memories as a found smile found its way to her face before turning into a frown when the recent events surfaced. Those moments no longer mattered, Scar. It was time to close the chapter.
After a split second hesitation, Scar pressed the pen down and signed her name to her dedicated spot. She pushed the papers towards the lawyer to receive another copy for her to sign. She turned the papers around to her lawyer in no time, maintaining a neutral look on her features. She was exhausted and wanted to settle her divorce matters fully before flying to Bahrain the week after to begin her F1 circuit craziness. Now, she was officially a free woman, no longer Mrs, but Ms. 'I'll catch up later. Thank you.' Scar shook hands with the lawyer, who promised to get in touch with her once all necessary paperwork was filed correctly and everything was finalised, but technically, she was a free woman. She shot once the last look towards Emerson, who was staring absently in front of him. She huffed at his actions. He had brought this upon them. 'Goodbye, Emerson.' He shot his head up, looking confused for a split second before murmuring softly. 'See you later, Scar', earning an eye roll from Scar. She had no interest in running into him anytime soon.
